> Five Meals to Abandon Defilements

> After finishing the meal, whether receiving water in a vessel, in a secluded spot, near a drain, by a step, holding a water bottle oneself, or having someone else provide water, one must thoroughly wash the hands. Then, chew a tooth stick to clean between the teeth and scrape the tongue, ensuring everything is clean. If any saliva remains, the purification is incomplete. Next, use bean meal or sometimes mix earth with water to form a paste, and wipe the lips to remove any greasy residue. Then, take water from the clean water bottle, either in a conch-shell cup, on a fresh leaf, or directly in the hand. The vessel and hands must be scrubbed clean three times with bean meal, earth, and dry cow dung to remove all grease. If in a secluded place, pour water from the clean bottle into the mouth; if in an open area, the rules prohibit this, so rinse the mouth two or three times to achieve purity. Until this is done, do not swallow any saliva, as doing so breaks decorum and incurs fault. Even before rinsing again with clean water, any spittle must be spat out. If this extends past noon, it violates the rule against eating at improper times. This is something few people know, and even those who do find it hard to observe. In this regard, using bean meal, flour, ash, or water can hardly avoid fault, mainly because food remains between the teeth and greasiness lingers on the tongue. The wise, considering this, should be mindful. How can one, after finishing the meal, talk idly for too long, not keep a clean water bottle, or not chew a tooth stick, harboring filth all day and incurring faults all night? Ending life in such a way is truly difficult. The water from the clean bottle may also be given by a disciple as part of the proper practice.
