The Sutra of the One Hundred and Eight Names of Mañjuśrī Spoken by the Buddha is a Buddhist scripture belonging to the esoteric tradition, translated during the Song Dynasty by the scripture translator Fa Tian. Fa Tian was a renowned translator of the Northern Song period, active from the late 10th to early 11th century, and counted among the three great translators alongside Tian Xi Zai and Shi Hu. This sutra enumerates the one hundred and eight names of the Bodhisattva Mañjuśrī in the form of Sanskrit hymns, illuminating his essential nature of Wisdom and his sublime virtues in delivering sentient beings. Through the recitation and praise of Mañjuśrī's names, the text embodies the profound reverence of Mahayana Buddhism for the Bodhisattva foremost in Wisdom, holding significant value for practice and ritual repentance. In Buddhism, Mañjuśrī Bodhisattva is regarded as the embodiment of the wisdom of all buddhas. This sutra serves as an important text for the study of esoteric Mañjuśrī devotion and has exerted a profound influence on the development of bodhisattva veneration within Chinese Buddhism.

佛說文殊師利一百八名梵讚

A Hundred and Eight Names of Manjushri

西天譯經三藏朝散大夫試鴻臚卿傳教大師臣法天奉 詔譯

Translated by the Tripitaka Master Dharma Deva, a court official and missionary master, under imperial decree.

我今宣說, 文殊師利, 一百八名,
殊勝功德。 一日三時, 受持讀誦,
所求意願, 決定現前。 依法課持,
身恒清淨, 罪障消除; 或入軍陣,
諸怖畏中, 文殊現身, 為作守護。
若常誦念, 速證菩提。

I now proclaim The names of Mañjuśrī, One hundred and eight, With supreme merit.

Whether morning, noon, or night, Those who recite and uphold them Shall see their wishes Fulfilled without fail.

Practicing according to the Dharma, The body stays pure, And all karmic obstacles dissolve. Whether entering battle Or facing any terror, Mañjuśrī appears To offer protection.

If one chants these names regularly, Enlightenment is swiftly attained.
