### 出喪掛真奠茶湯

> Funeral Rites: Hanging the Portrait and Offering Tea

庫司喪司相關。提調喪儀香亭。真亭幢幡唄樂。龕前傘椅。湯爐挑燈。竹篦主丈拂子。香盒法衣等物。小師隨龕後。鳴大鍾諸法器送喪。起龕念誦云金棺自舉。遶拘尸之大城。幢旆搖空。赴茶毘之盛禮。仰憑大眾。稱念洪名。用表攀違。上資覺路。念清淨法身毘盧遮那佛云云。若全身入塔。則云卦難提之盛禮喪司維那進燒香。引小師拜請。起龕佛事。龕至山門首。請奠亭掛真奠茶湯。俱有佛事。兩序大眾門列俟龕出已。山門維那向內合掌中立。舉往生呪。或四聖號。大眾齊念。主喪領眾。兩兩分出。左右俵散雪柳。齊步並行。毋得挨肩交語。各懷悲感。都寺押喪喪司維那知客聖僧侍者俵行喪䞋。

> Concerning the Office of Funeral Arrangements and the Office of Mourning: they oversee the funeral rituals, the incense pavilion, the memorial portrait pavilion, the banners, the chanting and music, the umbrella and chairs before the casket, the hot water stove, the hanging lanterns, the bamboo whisk, the staff, the fly whisk, the incense case, the monastic robe, and other items. The junior disciples follow behind the casket. The great bell is rung along with various instruments to escort the funeral procession. When lifting the casket for departure, the following invocation is recited: <note>“The golden casket raises itself, circling the great city of Kushinagar. Banners and streamers wave through the sky, as we proceed to the grand ceremony of cremation. Relying on the assembly, we invoke the sacred name, to express our reverence and sorrow, and to aid the path of awakening. Recite: ‘Pure Dharma Body Vairocana Buddha,’ and so forth. If the complete body is to be enshrined in a stupa, then say: ‘the grand ceremony of the difficult-to-attain’ instead.”</note> The funeral director and the rector then step forward to offer incense and guide the junior disciples in making prostrations and requests. The ceremony of lifting the casket then begins. When the casket reaches the main gate, an offering stand is set up, the portrait is hung, and tea and soup are offered—all accompanied by appropriate rites. The assembly of monks and laypeople lines up on both sides of the gate, waiting for the casket to pass. The gate rector, standing in the middle, faces inward with palms joined and recites the Birth-Transformation Mantra or the four sacred names. The assembly chants in unison. The chief mourner leads the group, and they walk out in pairs, distributing willow branches on both sides. They walk in step, without jostling shoulders or speaking to one another, each harboring feelings of grief. The head of the monastery oversees the procession, along with the funeral director, the rector, the guest master, and the attendant to the sacred monks, who distribute alms for the funeral.
