The Recorded Sayings of Zen Master Xuefeng Huikong was compiled by his Dharma successor Huibi. It is a collection of the transmitted teachings of the Song Dynasty Linji school master Xuefeng Huikong. Zen Master Huikong studied under Dahui Zonggao and was active during the Southern Song period. His recorded sayings include formal hall discourses, instructions to the assembly, encounter dialogues, and letters, embodying the essence of the Linji school’s huatou meditation practice and its dynamic, lively style. This record is not only an important text for studying Zen Master Huikong’s thought and the development of Southern Song Zen, but also serves as a vital guide for later practitioners investigating the nature of mind. It holds a significant place among Zen classics and has deeply influenced the transmission of the Linji school and the development of Zen thought.
