The Recorded Sayings of Chan Master Chijue Daochong was compiled by his Dharma heirs Zhiyi, Wukai, Xingmi, Shaozhen, Zhiyuan, Yuansheng, and Yuanshu. Chan Master Daochong was active during the mid to late Southern Song dynasty, residing successively at renowned monasteries. His recorded sayings encompass a wealth of content including formal discourses, informal instructions, Dharma words, encounter dialogues, poetic commentaries on old cases, and verses of praise, collectively embodying his Chan thought and style of guiding students. As a significant Chan discourse text from the Song dynasty, this work serves not only as an important source for studying Chan Master Daochong and the Linji Chan teachings of the Southern Song, but also as an authoritative scripture for understanding the development and intellectual characteristics of Chan Buddhism during that period, holding a distinguished place in Buddhist history.
