Taking Refuge in the Three Jewels
In accordance with the teachings, the disciple [Name] vows that from this very life until the end of future lifetimes, I take refuge in the Buddha, the most honored among the two-legged beings; I take refuge in the Dharma, the most honored in freedom from attachment; I take refuge in the Sangha, the most honored among all assemblies. (Recite three times)
The disciple [Name] and all others, from this very life until the end of future lifetimes, have taken refuge in the Buddha, have taken refuge in the Dharma, and have taken refuge in the Sangha. (Recite three times)
From this day forward, I take the Buddha as my teacher and will not turn to any other heretical teachings or misguided paths. I only pray that the Three Jewels, in their great compassion, will receive and guide us with loving-kindness. (One should elaborate on the unified nature of the Three Jewels as the foundation of refuge, and also understand the distinct forms and how they are upheld in practice.)
