Revered One of the Western Pure Land, Buddha of Infinite Life, rare in all the world; He can extinguish eons of beginningless karma, Causing all suffering and distress to be erased.
If one, with a subtle mind, Always contemplates the Pure Land, And explains it widely to sentient beings, Just by lifting their eyes, they see Amitabha.
The Buddha's body blazes with radiant light, No earthly gold can match its hue; Its height, beyond compare, extends to countless kilometers, Sixty trillion and beyond.
The white hair-knot between his brows is like five Mount Sumerus, His deep blue eyes are like four vast oceans; From every pore, light streams forth, Each pore contains a billion worlds.
Each world holds a river of sand, Each grain of sand has eighty-four thousand marks, And every mark contains them all; The seer and the seen appear as one.
By seeing the Buddha's form, we see his mind; When beings recollect him, they see his transformed body. Through this contemplation, they attain patience with the uncreate, And, in samadhi, receive infinite compassion.
The Buddha's body is measureless and vast beyond all bounds; Through his past vows, he guides and saves. Those who recollect him realize their goal, And their divine powers fill the sky.
Beings of three kinds, with threefold minds, Strive with courage, free from backsliding, And find the Tathagata's hand reaching out to welcome them, In a palace of seven jewels filled with brilliant light.
Their bodies leap joyfully onto a diamond throne, Following the Buddha in the time it takes to snap one's fingers. They practice the Great Vehicle and understand the ultimate truth, And are instantly born in a lotus pond of seven jewels.
Amitabha's great compassion And the ten powers of his majestic virtue are beyond all praise. Recite his name but once, with a single thought, And eighty billion eons of offense are cleared. Thus, his saving power is endless, And so he is called "Boundless Life."
Once, the World-Honored One on Vulture Peak Explained this wonderful cause-and-effect to the assembly, Freeing them from sorrow and all earthly woes, Helping them transcend all states of suffering.
The pure and wonderful land is the realm of ultimate bliss; Cultivate the three blessings and awaken the mind of enlightenment. Those who think on this with steadfastness Will understand the Contemplation of the Buddha of Infinite Life.
Such merit cannot be expressed in words; Inexpressible, too, is his wondrous light. It is given in boundless, pure, and equal measure, So that beings in the five turbidities may all become buddhas.
Cut off all delusory, upside-down thinking Like pouring water into the sea, Where wetness mingles without distinction; Though saintly wisdom can hardly tell them apart, Each person is already the Buddha of Infinite Life. Bow your head and see—this very moment is the Western Land.
