The Five Great Nectar Rain Treasure Dharani Ritual Manual (Vajra-kīrti-nāma) is an important esoteric scripture translated by the Tang Dynasty Vajrayana master Amoghavajra. This ritual manual belongs to the Vajradhatu (Diamond Realm) esoteric system, focusing on the practice methods and ceremonial regulations of the Five Great Nectar Rain Treasure Dharani, including practical guidance on mantras, mudras, visualizations, and offering methods. Its historical background originates from the peak period of Tang Dynasty esoteric Buddhism, reflecting the emphasis of Chinese esoteric Buddhism on methods for wealth, abundance, and disaster relief. In terms of Buddhist significance, this scripture is revered as one of the core ritual manuals for seeking wealth and rain treasures in esoteric Buddhism, integrating the dual teachings of Prajñā wisdom and worldly provisions, and has profoundly influenced later esoteric practices and folk beliefs.

Vajra Wisdom Translation

At that time, the Tathagata was in the secret Vajra Peak Yoga palace, surrounded by a gathering as numerous as dust particles, expounding profound and subtle secret teachings.

At that time in the assembly, there was a great bodhisattva named King of Emptiness and Spiritual Power, who rose from his seat, bowed at the Buddha’s feet, and addressed the Buddha, saying: “World-Honored One, in past immeasurable kalpas, I have made offerings to all the Buddhas and practiced the supreme secret teachings—the Great Jewel Rain Dhāraṇī of the Five Great Bulls. This is the most profound, secret, subtle, and auspicious treasury of great treasures of all the Buddhas and World-Honored Ones. For the sake of beings in this degenerate age—whether lay or monastic, poor and distressed, lacking in merit, with insufficient resources and unfulfilled wishes—I wish to teach this method so that all their aspirations may be fulfilled. I only pray that the World-Honored One, out of compassion, will grant permission.”

At that time, the Tathagata praised him, saying: "Excellent! Speak as you wish. In countless eons past, when I was still on the path of practice, I made a great vow with powerful resolve: for all beings throughout the entire ocean of the dharma realm—especially for the beings of this Sahā world, who have little merit and are of humble capacity—I vowed to become a great water buffalo of jade, with silver hooves, golden horns, and the color of blue lapis lazuli, possessing immense strength that pervades the dharma realm, manifesting in forms suited to each kind of being to bring them great benefit, just as you now make your vast vow. The Rain of Treasures Dhāraṇī that you wish to teach is the supreme secret seal of the jade buffalo treasure of all buddhas—a profound hidden method that benefits multitudes of beings."

Then, the Bodhisattva of Great Secret, King of Vast Space and Spiritual Penetrations, having received the Buddha's permission, spoke these verses before the Tathagata:

"I rely on the supreme vehicle of all Buddhas, The secret yoga known as Rain of Treasures, For the age of decline, when blessings are few, The Buddha taught this profound method of accomplishment.

If there are beings lacking blessings and wisdom, Whose every desire fails to be fulfilled, From this poverty and suffering, they create evil karma, Falling into the three lower realms with no hope of escape.

By following the secret method I have taught, Practicing the Rain of Treasures Dhāraṇī, They will be freed from poverty, hardship, and suffering, And all the wishes in their hearts will be fulfilled.

If, in my great compassionate vow, Even one person fails to achieve their wishes in this life or the next, May I fall into the suffering of falsehood and sin, Never returning to original enlightenment, abandoning great compassion."

Next, let's discuss the practice methods:

If you wish to practice this supreme Dharma, first purify your body, speech, and mind. Then, face a virtuous teacher, receive the ritual instructions, and undergo the empowerment.

You may set up the mandala either in a secluded mountain retreat or in a temple—wherever you feel most at ease. Prepare a square platform of any suitable size. Upon this platform, arrange the sacred images.

The method for creating the image is as follows:

His body is golden yellow, with four arms and one face, adorned with a crown of five oxen jades. This is the five-buddha jeweled crown. His left hand holds a sun disk, his right hand holds a moon disk. His left hand holds a wish-fulfilling jewel shape at the heart, while his right hand forms the gesture of fearlessness, slightly apart, positioned at the jewel shape.

The practitioner should face east toward the image on the altar and recite, scattering various seasonal flowers upon the altar, burning incense, lighting lamps, offering food and fruits—whatever one can arrange according to one’s ability as offerings.

Each time one enters the practice space, prostrate fully on the ground before the revered image, paying homage to all buddhas and the assembly of saints. Then, after performing confession, rejoicing in others’ merits, requesting the teaching, and making vows, sit in full lotus or half-lotus posture. Sit comfortably, straighten the body, and maintain correct mindfulness. Always apply fragrant paste to both hands, join the palms with an open heart, and recite the mantra for purifying the three karmas:

Om, the one who has entered the supreme enlightenment, svaha.
