The "Abbreviated Guide to Conferring the Three Refuges, Five and Eight Precepts, and Bodhisattva Precepts," compiled by Master Zan of Chengzhao, is a significant Buddhist Vinaya text from the Tang Dynasty. This work systematically elucidates the rituals for conferring and the essential principles for upholding the Three Refuges, the Five Precepts, the Eight Precepts, and the Bodhisattva Precepts. Its content is concise yet comprehensive. It reflects the rigor and widespread practice of Buddhist precept transmission during the Tang Dynasty, offering particular guidance for the cultivation norms of the lay community. As an important reference for the ritual of conferring precepts in Chinese Buddhism, this text holds a pivotal position in the Buddhist Vinaya studies and practical system, serving as a crucial foundation for the development of later Vinaya scholarship.
