Initial Clarification of Existence and Omission
按經中佛答文殊問名，共有五句：一曰是經名大佛頂悉怛多般怛羅無上寶印十方如來清淨海眼。今僅存三字，略去十八字。以大佛頂三字，全示此經正體，是故須存此體，即是顯密圓詮之所依，亦即顯密圓詮之所顯。悉怛多般怛羅無上寶印，密詮不離此體也。十方如來清淨海眼，顯詮不離此體也。故但存三字，而顯密二教之體，攝盡無遺矣。二曰亦名救護親因。度脫阿難，及此會中性比丘尼，得菩提心，入徧知海。此名全略，以其單從用立，近而復狹。阿難、性尼二人，可以攝入諸菩薩中。菩提、徧知二法，可以攝入首楞嚴中。蓋首楞嚴三昧為能得能入，菩提心徧知海為所得所入，能所原自不二故也。三曰亦名如來密因。修證了義，此名全存，以是一經宗要故。四曰亦名大方廣妙蓮華王十方佛母陀羅尼呪。此亦從體與宗立名，單約密詮，是故俱略，實則還是大佛頂如來密因義耳。顯密本無二體，亦無二宗，故得以顯攝密。五曰亦名灌頂章句諸菩薩萬行首楞嚴。此十二字，從用立名，略四存八，亦是以顯攝密。
According to the Buddha's answer to Manjushri's question on the sutra's title in the text, there are five names:
First: This sutra is called "The Great Buddha's Pinnacle, the Supreme Jewel Seal of the Sitatapatra, the Pure Ocean Eye of the Tathagatas." Now only three characters are preserved, omitting eighteen. The three characters "Great Buddha's Pinnacle" fully reveal the essence of this sutra, so they must be retained. This essence is the foundation upon which both exoteric and esoteric teachings rely, and also what they illuminate. "Sitatapatra," "Supreme Jewel Seal," esoteric teachings do not depart from this essence. "The Pure Ocean Eye of the Tathagatas," exoteric teachings do not depart from this essence. Hence, by preserving only these three characters, the essence of both exoteric and esoteric teachings is completely encompassed.
Second: It is also called "Saving Those Close to You," "Rescuing Ananda and the Bhikshuni Nature in this Assembly, Attaining the Bodhi Mind, and Entering the Ocean of All-Knowing." This name is entirely abbreviated, as it is established solely based on function, narrow and limited in scope. Ananda and Bhikshuni Nature can be included among all bodhisattvas. The two principles—Bodhi and All-Knowing—can be incorporated into the Surangama. This is because the Surangama Samadhi is what is attained and entered, while the Bodhi Mind and the Ocean of All-Knowing are what are attained and entered. The attainer and the attained are fundamentally non-dual.
Third: It is also called "The Tathagata's Secret Cause," "The Ultimate Meaning of Cultivation and Realization." This name is fully preserved, as it is the essential teaching of the entire sutra.
Fourth: It is also called "The Great, Vast, Perfect, Wondrous Lotus King, the Mother of All Tathagatas, the Dharani Mantra." This name is also established based on essence and teaching, focusing solely on esoteric meaning, so it is omitted. In truth, it still refers to the meaning of the Great Buddha's Pinnacle and the Tathagata's Secret Cause. Exoteric and esoteric are fundamentally one essence and one teaching, so exoteric can encompass esoteric.
Fifth: It is also called "The Chapters on Abhisheka, the Myriad Practices of Bodhisattvas, the Surangama." These twelve characters are established based on function. Four are omitted and eight are preserved, again using exoteric to encompass esoteric.
