> Chapter 9: Habitual Tendencies

> Perverse habits intertwine, arising from deception and falsehood. Because of deceit and slander, one lacks an honest heart within. Praising others for good, afraid only that they may not reach heaven; defaming others for evil, worried only that they may not sink into the abyss. Mocking and slandering the virtuous, disparaging monastics. Their will is not loyal, their mind harbors hypocrisy. Thus, mountains collide and stones grind, millstones crush and grind, like slanderous thieves pressing and wronging the worthy. False accusations stack upon each other, bringing pressing, pounding, and measuring devices of all sorts. Therefore, all Buddhas, seeing with their Dharma eyes, call false accusation and slander by the same name: "slanderous tigers." Bodhisattvas see such wrongdoing as if struck by thunder. I and all beings, from beginningless time to the present, have not realized that the habit of false accusation and deceit is truly like a slanderous tiger. Sometimes we use unjust means to frame our own friends and relatives, to slander our teachers and monastics, and to harm others. Our minds lack kindness and forbearance, cruelly harming the innocent. Widows, widowers, orphans, and the solitary are suddenly caught in extraordinary calamities, dying with pent-up grievances that can hardly be voiced. Such resentment and slander create endless karmic appearances. Therefore, now with right intention and sincere mind, I reverently face this sacred assembly, disclosing and repenting. May all habitual falsehoods melt away like ice. May the power of practice and vows perfect the perfection of strength (bala-pāramitā). May I never harbor evil thoughts that create further paths of suffering. May I forever guide beings in the human and heavenly realms, cultivate good wisdom, lead all sentient beings, and together return to perfect enlightenment.
