> Sixth, Karma of the Mind Creates Retribution

> The retribution of the mind-consciousness works in this way: When such a person's life ends, they first see a vicious wind destroying the lands and realms. The deceased's consciousness is blown up into the sky, then carried by the wind, spinning downward, and falls into the Avīci Hell. Two characteristics then arise: First, confusion—being so lost in bewilderment that one rushes about frantically without stopping. Second, awareness—one clearly perceives oneself and thus experiences immense suffering, scorched and tormented beyond endurance, the pain too deep to bear. Such distorted thinking, when crystallized into concepts, can manifest as directions and destinations. When crystallized into views, it becomes an iron mirror stand, serving as both reflection and evidence. When crystallized into hearing, it becomes massive crushing stones, ice, frost, earth, or fog. When crystallized into breath, it becomes great fiery wheels, fire ships, and fire cages. When crystallized into taste, it becomes great wailing, regret, and weeping. When crystallized into touch, it becomes vast or tiny forms—ten thousand deaths and ten thousand rebirths within a single day—lying face down or face up. These six kinds of retribution are called "mutual retribution." They all arise from sentient beings' deluded perceptions. The three poisons are the root cause; the ten habitual patterns provide the conditions. When causes and conditions intertwine, retributions combine and come to fruition. From this we understand that illusory actions bring illusory retribution. All of this is like flowers appearing in empty space—mere chaotic visions obscuring true nature. Yet within principle and phenomena, nothing has ever truly been distorted. Deluded thoughts arise, but within the mind of enlightenment, they have never been part of its original essence. Therefore, we who are ordinary beings—how could we know the noble path? Some are led astray by the three poisons, some accumulate faults through the ten habitual patterns, some create karma through the six sense faculties. We will surely fall into the four wretched destinies and revolve in saṃsāra. Thus, I now earnestly seek compassion and repent. I look up with reverence to the Three Jewels throughout the ten directions and to the Compassionate Honored One, Kṣitigarbha of the Ten Wheels. May they emit pure radiance, illuminating us so that all our faults and transgressions—both self-made and other-induced—melt away like ice. May we, through the power of this repentance, increase our spiritual progress while diminishing our karmic obstacles, ultimately attaining peace and bliss. May the vajra wisdom shine through and shatter our ignorance. May the secret treasury of the mind-ground come to perfect fulfillment in a single thought, just as we aspire. May we attain the ten powers of a Buddha, the four kinds of fearlessness, and the eighteen unique qualities. May we perfect immeasurable virtues, fully realize the six supernormal powers, and clearly see the three aspects of time. May we broadly proclaim the four types of eloquence, liberating all sentient beings exhaustively, and only then enter final cessation. Having made this sincere repentance and vow with a steadfast mind, I take refuge in the everlasting Three Jewels.
