(The Commentary says: The Sutra of Laypeople Inviting Monastics states that the Nirvana section's latter portion contains three more chapters on cremating the body and building stupas. The Essentials states: The current text of the Teachings on Returning to the Source corresponds to the chapter on entrusting, while the detailed explanation of cremation corresponds to the instructions on cremating the body and building stupas, though our text has not yet reached that point.)
南本大般涅槃經三十六卷二十五品章安尊者疏分文為五初從如是訖序品是召請涅槃眾二從純陀訖大眾問合十六品是開演涅槃施三從現病訖德王合五品是示現涅槃行四從師子吼訖品是問答涅槃義五從迦葉訖陳如品是折攝涅槃用。
The Southern Edition of the Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra, in thirty-six scrolls and twenty-five chapters, is divided into five sections by the Venerable Master Zhang'an:
First, from "Thus have I heard" to the end of the "Introductory Chapter" — this is summoning the Nirvāṇa assembly.
Second, from the "Chunda" chapter to the "Great Assembly's Questions" chapter, totaling sixteen chapters — this is proclaiming the gift of Nirvāṇa.
Third, from the "Manifesting Illness" chapter to the "Virtuous King" chapter, totaling five chapters — this is demonstrating the practice of Nirvāṇa.
Fourth, from the "Lion's Roar" chapter to the end of its division — this is discussing the meaning of Nirvāṇa through questions and answers.
Fifth, from the "Kāśyapa" chapter to the "Aśvajit" chapter — this is using flexible means to guide beings toward Nirvāṇa.
