> Chapter 2: Taking Refuge in the Three Jewels

> Today, in this assembly, all of us who share this practice should once again turn our minds toward the Three Jewels. Why is this so? If we do not know the Three Jewels, how can we give rise to a heart of loving-kindness and compassion for all beings? If we do not know the Three Jewels, how can we give rise to a heart of mercy to rescue and embrace all? If we do not know the Three Jewels, how can we develop an equal view toward friend and foe alike? If we do not know the Three Jewels, how can we attain profound wisdom and realize the supreme path? If we do not know the Three Jewels, how can we clearly understand the true nature of emptiness and the reality beyond appearances? The Buddha said: "A human life is hard to obtain—now we have obtained it. Faith is hard to arise—now it has arisen." Each of us now has a mind that takes refuge in the Three Jewels. Our eyes do not see the colors of greed, anger, and ignorance. Our ears do not hear the sounds of suffering, torment, and distress from the hells and the hungry ghosts. Our noses do not smell the stench of decay, pus, and blood from the hells and the hungry ghosts. Our tongues do not taste the foul, impure flavors of the world. Our bodies do not touch the pains of boiling cauldrons, fiery furnaces, or freezing ice. And our minds constantly know the Buddha as the supreme father of compassion, know all teachings as the good medicine for beings, and know the sages as the caring mother who tends to the sick. Our minds are always mindful of the Three Jewels, protecting and guiding all who are aware. We should always remember: we are fortunate to have been born in a time when, though we do not meet the Buddha himself, we live in an age when his image and teachings remain. We possess faith, our six senses are pure and free from decay and affliction, we move through life with ease and freedom, coming and going without obstruction. Such excellent conditions do not come by chance—they are the result of past causes and the compassionate power of the Three Jewels. Moreover, in this very life, they enable us to give rise to the mind of awakening. Benefits such as these are beyond full description.

> Today, in this sacred assembly, all fellow practitioners, how can we not each repay our kindness and make offerings? Among all virtuous offerings, the most profound is this: the scriptures say, "Even if we recall past lives of making offerings, they were but slight. Yet through the blessings received over countless eons, we encounter the heavenly teacher." The scriptures also state, "If one wishes to repay, they may build stupas, establish pure dwellings, offer lamps, candles, banners, canopies, flowers, incense, cushions, and all manner of offerings. In future lives, they will reap their own blessings." Yet such offerings alone do not repay the Buddha's kindness. To truly repay the Buddha's kindness, one must arouse the mind of enlightenment, uphold the four great vows, create boundless connections, adorn the body and mind, and cultivate the practice of the Pure Land. This is how the wise know gratitude and repay it.

> Today, in this assembly of fellow practitioners, we gather together. The boundless compassion of all Buddhas is a kindness we can never fully repay. Even if the great Bodhisattvas were to shatter their bodies, they could not repay one ten-thousandth of it. How much less can we ordinary beings ever repay it? Therefore, let us all, as taught in the scriptures, make benefiting others our highest aim. With utmost sincerity, let us bow with our five limbs touching the ground. For the sake of all sentient beings throughout the ten directions—limitless, endless beings of the four modes of birth—we take refuge in the Great Compassionate Father of this world.
