The *Vinaya for Daily Practice* is a Buddhist disciplinary text compiled by the eminent monk Xingqi during the Ming Dynasty. Completed in the late Ming period, this work primarily gathers the precepts, rituals, and codes of conduct that Buddhist monastics should follow in their daily cultivation. Its content covers details such as clothing, food, sitting, lying down, speech, and behavior, embodying the rigorous spirit of upholding precepts characteristic of the Vinaya School. As an essential practical manual for the Vinaya tradition in Chinese Buddhism, it not only guides the daily lives of monastics but also serves as a valuable reference for lay practitioners in observing precepts. Holding a significant place in the transmission and practice of Buddhist discipline, it is an important text for the study of Vinaya during the Ming Dynasty.

To attain supreme enlightenment, one must first uphold pure precepts. When precepts are observed with care, concentration and wisdom naturally arise. Therefore, the practice of precepts lies not in separation from daily life. If one’s actions never forget the precepts, they naturally become pure and refined. This applies to every activity—walking, standing, sitting, lying down, eating, dressing—even to the most ordinary bodily functions—none should be neglected, even for a moment.

As the *Sutra of Pure Conduct* says: “If bodhisattvas use their minds well, they will attain all sublime and wondrous virtues, and will encounter no obstacles in the Buddha’s teachings.” It also says: “When a bodhisattva uses their mind in this way, no force in the world—gods, demons, ascetics, brahmins, celestial musicians, titans, or even those of the hearer or solitary realizer paths—can move them.”

From this we see that cultivating pure precepts and practicing virtuous conduct is far beyond what lesser vehicles can compare to. How could anyone dare to neglect such learning? Therefore, a monk who upholds the precepts should practice every teaching in the *Sutra of Pure Conduct*, so as not to betray the intention of leaving home.

However, beginners of weak capacity cannot fully practice these teachings. Therefore, I have necessarily taken the essence of the vast teachings and appended ancient esoteric mantras to aid their initial study. This work is called the *Vinaya Daily Practice*, intended to help practitioners—in every hour of the day and night—realize their own mind through the forms of practice, thereby gaining an entry point into supreme enlightenment. To help spread this widely, I humbly write this preface.
