The Treatise on the Seventy Emptinesses consists of seventy-three verses. It is called "Seventy" because we follow the majority or round down the count. These seventy verses are the words that convey the meaning, while the "dharma of non-reliance" of ultimate emptiness is the truth they express—this is "emptiness nature." The treatise is named as such because it uses seventy verses to articulate the truth of the ultimate emptiness of all phenomena, or to reveal that the inherent nature of dependently arising phenomena is ultimately unfindable.
The Commentary on the Seventy Emptinesses was also composed by the Bodhisattva Nagarjuna himself.
The entire meaning of the *Seventy Stanzas on Emptiness* can be summarized into ten key aspects, and therefore it is presented in ten chapters.
Chapter 1: Stating the Core Teaching
Arising, persisting, ceasing; existence and non-existence; inferior, equal, and superior. The Buddha teaches these according to the world's understanding, not according to the ultimate truth.
Birth, existence, cessation, being, non-being, inferior, equal, superior—all such designations the Buddha employed solely based on worldly convention, not on ultimate truth.
Question: When we speak of “I” or “self” in ordinary terms, does that not imply that a self truly exists? Since later, through the insight of selflessness, one comes to understand the absence of a self, it must be that a self exists in the first place.
Answer:
There is no self, yet not no self; thus, nothing can truly be said.
Why is that?
All teachings spoken are empty in nature, like nirvana.
Question: When you say all phenomena are inherently empty, are you saying this because the king commands it, or because you have truly realized the principle that all phenomena are empty by nature?
The true nature of all things is found within their causes and conditions. Whether taken together or examined separately, they lack any independent existence. This is what we call emptiness.
The inherent nature of all phenomena is not found within their causes, within their conditions, or within the combination of causes and conditions. It is not found within any individual phenomenon whatsoever. Therefore, it is said that the inherent nature of all phenomena is entirely empty.
"Living beings are spoken of only in conventional terms; 'no self' also means there is no real self. This reveals that all is empty, for in both general and specific conditions, there is no inherent nature."
