Nirvana Chapter 2, Scroll Commentary (Private Notes) (First Part)
Chapter on Cunda
The text explains the teachings regarding "permanence" and "impermanence." In the past, at the Deer Park, the Buddha taught that all things are impermanent. But when we reach the Lotus Sutra, this limited teaching is opened up and fully revealed.
Regarding the "breaking" of wrong views, this occurs throughout the Vaipulya and Prajñāpāramitā periods—teaching both permanence and impermanence.
In the present Lotus Sutra, "permanence" is taught as the basis for breaking delusion. The "opening up" is the same as before. However, although the Lotus Sutra reveals things openly, it still includes some provisional methods and is intended for those in later times.
Thus, it shows how the Buddha’s teaching can be understood both as opening and breaking—moving freely between the two.
When things arise, give accordingly—this is the practice of constant cultivation. At the end of the Lamentation Chapter, it broadly refutes the three limited practices. The three virtues of the new "I" are what is called constant cultivation.
