Sutra of the Dharani for Rescuing from Suffering
Translation by the Tang Dynasty Tripitaka Master Xuanzang, by Imperial Decree
Thus I have heard:
One time, the Blessed One was staying in Shravasti, at the Jeta Grove, in Anathapindika's Park. He was accompanied by countless hearers and great bodhisattvas, together with gods, humans, asuras, and other beings—a vast, immeasurable assembly gathered before and behind him.
At that time, a Bodhisattva named Inexpressible Merit and Dignity rose from his seat, prostrated himself at the Buddha’s feet, and with palms joined in respect, said to the Buddha: “World-Honored One! In this world, countless beings, driven by afflictions and conditions, commit all kinds of evil deeds. As a result, they will fall into the hells, the realm of hungry ghosts, or the animal realm, or even endure intense suffering among gods and humans. I beg you, in your compassion, to employ skillful means to save and rescue them.”
The Buddha said: "Good man! Excellent, excellent. Out of compassion for all beings, you have made this request. Listen carefully, listen carefully. I will now briefly explain the means to rescue beings from suffering. Good man, there is a Buddha, the World-Honored One, named the Immovable Tathagata, the Arhat, the Fully Enlightened One. For the benefit and happiness of all beings, He taught a dhāraṇī for everyone to recite. The dhāraṇī is:"
Gati-gati, free from all impediments, free from all hindrances, utterly liberated, completely liberated, completely purified, all karmic obstructions destroyed, all karmic hindrances purified, perfectly accomplished – so be it.
"If there are good men and good women who, with utmost sincerity, pay homage to Akshobhya, the Tathagata, the Arhat, the Fully Enlightened One, and uphold this mantra, all the karmic offenses they have previously committed—the five heinous sins, the four grave transgressions, the ten evil deeds, slandering sages and saints, and denigrating the true Dharma—will be completely eradicated. At the moment of their death, that Buddha Akshobhya, along with many Bodhisattvas, will appear before them, praising and comforting them, filling them with joy. He will then say to them: 'I have come now to receive you. You should follow me to the Buddha realm where I dwell.' After their death, they will certainly be reborn in the pure land of Akshobhya, the Tathagata.
Good man! There is also another World-Honored One, called the Tathagata, the Arhat, the Fully Enlightened One, who is the King of Destroying Evil Destinies. For the benefit and happiness of all beings, He taught a dharani for sentient beings to recite. The dharani goes:"
"Purify, purify. Completely purify all negative actions. Pure, completely pure. Completely purify all karma. So be it."
"If there are good men and good women who sincerely pay homage and make offerings to the Thus Come One, the Worthy, the Perfectly Enlightened King Who Destroys Evil Realms, and uphold this mantra, for fourteen thousand kalpas they will always remember their past lives. Wherever they are reborn, they will obtain a body of a man, complete with all faculties, deeply believing in cause and effect. They will be skilled in various arts, have a wonderful understanding of all treatises, delight in practicing generosity, and abandon all desires. They will not commit evil deeds, will be free from all dangers and fears, will possess right livelihood and wisdom, and will be loved and respected by many. They will always associate with good spiritual friends, constantly hear the true Dharma, and their aspiration for enlightenment will never be abandoned for even a moment. They will adorn themselves with all virtues, possess pure precepts and discipline, and fear all evil deeds. They will never experience lack, will be gentle and tranquil, and will always enjoy happiness among gods and humans. They will quickly realize the unsurpassed, perfect enlightenment, and will never retreat from the ten perfections. Their constant wish will be to benefit and bring joy to all sentient beings. All of their practices will not be solely for their own benefit. Wherever they are reborn, they will constantly see the Buddha, uphold the true Dharma, and join the assembly of noble and holy beings."
After the Blessed One had spoken this sutra, the hearers, bodhisattvas, heavenly beings, humans, and asuras alike, upon hearing the Buddha's words, were filled with great joy, accepted it with faith, and put it into practice.
