Now, the Bodhisattva precepts: They are the foundation for the path of all saints, the source of all goodness. They open the door to the nectar of liberation and lead to the road of enlightenment. As the *Brahma Net Sutra* says, "When beings receive the Buddha's precepts, they enter the rank of the Buddhas." If you wish to know the Buddha's precepts, they are simply the mind of all beings—there is no other teaching. Because one awakens to one's own mind, this is called "Buddha." Because it can serve as a guiding standard, this is called "Dharma." Because the nature of mind and its qualities are united without duality, this is called "Sangha." Because the mind-nature is perfectly pure, this is called "precepts." Because it is still yet illuminating, this is called "wisdom." Because the mind is originally quiescent, this is called "Nirvana." This is the Supreme Vehicle of the Tathagata, the essential meaning brought from the West by the patriarchs. Many who hear it are hindered, and many who see it are filled with doubt—this is because their defilements are deep and their merit slight, just as the blind do not see, not because the sun or moon are at fault. If there are those with sincere resolve who receive or hear this teaching, the benefits of the Dharma are boundless. Even the seven eloquent praises cannot exhaust it, and all saints look up to it without limit. It can truly be called the mother of all Buddhas, giving birth to all guides; the king of wondrous medicines, able to cure all illnesses. The essential path to awakening lies in nothing else.
The Vairocana Buddha teaches the Ten Grounds Dharma, guiding bodhisattvas in their discipline and establishing the practices of the Tathagata. The countless rules of discipline are fully encompassed within the three pure precepts, and the myriad causes of practice are completely realized in a single thought. Great practitioners on the five stages of the spiritual path all rely on this for their perfect cause, and the jewel kings of the ten worlds achieve their full results through this. Now, as we wish to propagate this great teaching, it is difficult to meet those with the proper conditions. Only those who have previously planted the seeds of the One Vehicle can develop faith and understanding. Those attached to their own views and feelings will find it hard to resolve their doubts. Therefore, we must present a series of questions and answers to remove the obstacles of false views.
