Sutra of the Mother of All Constellations
Translated by the Shramana Facheng at Xiuduosi Temple in Ganzhou
Thus I have heard:
Thus I have heard.
At one time, the Blessed One was dwelling in a great gathering place in the wilderness. All the gods, dragons, yakshas, rakshasas, gandharvas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, mahoragas, demons, and the great assemblies of the sun, moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu, Comet deities, and the twenty-eight lunar mansions all praised the vows of the great Vajra beings. There, seated on a lion throne majestic with power and grace, the Blessed One gathered together with the bodhisattvas. Their names were: Vajrapāṇi Bodhisattva Mahāsattva, Vajrakrodha Bodhisattva Mahāsattva, Vajrakula Bodhisattva Mahāsattva, Vajradhanus Bodhisattva Mahāsattva, Vajreśa Bodhisattva Mahāsattva, Vajravyūha Bodhisattva Mahāsattva, Vajraprabha Bodhisattva Mahāsattva, Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva Mahāsattva, Samanta-darśana Bodhisattva Mahāsattva, Lokamaṅgala Bodhisattva Mahāsattva, Padma-dhvaja Bodhisattva Mahāsattva, Viśāla-mukha Bodhisattva Mahāsattva, Puṣpa-netra Bodhisattva Mahāsattva, Mañjuśrī Bodhisattva Mahāsattva, Maitreya Bodhisattva Mahāsattva, and others. These great bodhisattvas surrounded him in front and behind, gazing at him in reverence as he taught the Dharma. This Dharma was called "The Great and Majestic Wish-Fulfilling Jewel." It was excellent in the beginning, excellent in the middle, and excellent in the end. Its words and meanings were sublime, pure, untainted, and a completely virtuous way of life.
At that time, the Vajra-being looked out over the assembly, rose from his seat, and used his own spiritual power to circle the World-Honored One hundreds of thousands of times. He then made a full bow, stood before him with confidence, sat in a graceful cross-legged posture, and gazed upon the gathering. Placing his diamond-like palm over his heart, he said to the Buddha: “World-Honored One, there are malevolent stars with terrifying appearances, fierce and wrathful in nature. They disturb living beings, robbing them of their vitality, their wealth, or even their lives. They cause long-lived beings to die young, bringing chaos to all living things. For the sake of all beings, I pray that the World-Honored One will reveal the Dharma-door to protect them.” The World-Honored One replied: “Excellent, excellent! Out of great compassion, and for the benefit of all beings, you have asked the Tathagata about this profound and hidden meaning. Listen well and remember this. I will now explain the methods to counter the wrath of malignant stars, as well as the secret teachings of offerings, giving, and recitation.”
"If you wish to make offerings, then make offerings. If you wish to do evil, then do evil. In such ways do the stars, punishments, and colors manifest— How then could they bring about joy?
The devas and the asuras, The kinnaras and the nagas, The yakshas and the rakshasas, Humans and the kumbhandas,
These mighty and terrifying great spirits— How can their wrath be calmed? The secret words and offering methods Shall now be explained in order."
At that time, Shakyamuni Tathagata emitted from his own heart a playful light of loving-kindness, which entered into the crowns and feet of all the star deities. Immediately, all the gods of the sun, moon, and stars rose from their seats, made offerings to Shakyamuni Tathagata with celestial tributes, knelt on the ground, pressed their palms together, and said to the Buddha: "World-Honored One! Tathagata, the Worthy One, the Fully Enlightened One, you benefit us all. We humbly ask you to expound the Dharma teaching, so that when we have gathered, we may protect and defend the teacher of the Dharma, bringing him good fortune, keeping him far from swords and weapons, dispelling poisons, and creating a sanctuary."
At that time, Shakyamuni Buddha then taught them the method of making offerings to the stars and this sacred mantra:
Om, homage to the Kinnara! Svaha! Om, homage to the brilliant one! Svaha! Om, homage to the radiant Kumara! Svaha! Om, homage to the protector, the protector! Svaha! Om, homage to the blessed one, the lord of the world! Svaha! Om, homage to the one with the divine serpent's multitudes! Svaha! Om, homage to the one who holds the radiant jewel! Svaha! Om, homage to the one of immortal friendship! Svaha! Om, homage to the one who has attained the highest state! Svaha!
"Vajrapani! This is the secret heart mantra of those eight stars. Recite it and it will be accomplished. Prepare an eleven-finger-wide fragrant offering altar—or use a vessel made of clay, copper, gold, or silver—and make offerings. For each offering, recite the mantra one hundred and eight times. Vajrapani! Then recite this Mother of All Stars Dharani and its secret words seven full times. All the stars will then provide protection. Those who are poor will be freed from poverty. Those whose lives are nearly over will gain long life. Vajrapani! If a monk, nun, layman, or laywoman—or any other living being—hears this with their own ears, they will not die a premature death. Vajrapani! When you have made offerings in the star altar and recite this daily, the teaching master will have all of the stars fulfill their wishes, and all matters of poverty and lack will be eliminated for them."
At that time, the Tathagata Shakyamuni immediately taught them the Dharani of the Mother of All Stars, and spoke this mantra:
I take refuge in the Buddha. I take refuge in the Dharma, the truth revealed. I take refuge in the Sangha, the community of practitioners. I take refuge in all the celestial beings. I take refuge in all the powers of the universe. I take refuge in the seven stars. I take refuge in the guardians of the directions.
Deep and profound, deep and profound. Purify, purify. Shine forth, shine forth. Flow, flow. Spread, spread. Radiate everywhere, radiate everywhere. Root of goodness, root of goodness. Destroy, destroy. Utterly destroy, utterly destroy. Burn away all harm.
Act, act. Illuminate, illuminate. Dispel misfortune, dispel misfortune. Calm and settle. May all be as I wish. May all the wandering stars and constellations be peaceful. May all suffering be stilled.
O mighty one, O great one, Complete awakening, supreme peace. Wash away, wash away all wrongdoing. Extinguish all evil.
Blazing, blazing. Powerful, powerful. Victorious, victorious. Glorious, glorious.
Refuge, refuge. I bow to all the Tathagatas—the Thus-Come Ones. By their grace, may it be accomplished. Om, may it be so. Hum, may it be so. Hri, may it be so. Hum, may it be so. Hang, may it be so. May the lotus-grounded one prevail. May the invincible one prevail. May the radiant moon prevail. May the wish-fulfilling gem prevail. May the enlightened one prevail. May the awakened being prevail. May the joyful one prevail. May the pure and peaceful one prevail. May the shining one prevail.
I pay homage to the Lotus Holder, the Dharma King. I pay homage to the youthful one. I pay homage to the constellations. I pay homage to all the stellar deities. Om, may every obstacle be utterly destroyed. So be it.
"Vajrapani! This is the secret mantra of the Star Mother Dhāraṇī, the foundation for accomplishing all matters. Vajrapani! This secret mantra originates from the seventh day of the bright fortnight of the ninth month. One should observe complete purification and, on the fourteenth day, make offerings to the stars. Then, on the fifteenth day, if one recites it day and night, for nine full years they need not fear death, nor dread falling stars, nor fear evil deeds from the moon and constellations. They will remember past lives and be able to make offerings to all the stars. The stars will grant whatever they wish." Then the stars, after venerating the World-Honored One, praised him, saying, "Well done," and suddenly vanished.
