The Sutra of the Secret Casket Seal Heart Dhāraṇī of All Tathāgatas is an important esoteric Buddhist scripture translated during the Northern Song dynasty by the Indian master Dānapāla. This sutra originated during the developmental period of Indian Vajrayāna and was translated into Chinese by Dānapāla under Emperor Taizong of Song. Its core expounds the profound principles of the secret casket seal heart of all Tathāgatas, emphasizing the supreme merits of dhāraṇī mantras. It teaches that through reciting these esoteric mantras, practitioners may receive the blessings of all buddhas, purify karmic obstructions, and awaken wisdom. Belonging to the Tang esoteric tradition, this sutra represents a fusion of Tathāgatagarbha thought with tantric practice. It holds a revered position within Chinese esoteric Buddhism and serves as a key foundational text for the cultivation of mantra methods.

Thus have I heard:

At one time, the Buddha was in the country of Magadha, in the Immaculate Garden beside the Pool of Radiant Treasure, together with great bodhisattvas and the hearers, along with devas, nagas, yakshas, gandharvas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, mahoragas, humans and non-humans, and also assemblies of kings, elders, and householders—surrounded by hundreds of thousands who listened to the Dharma with reverence.

At that time, within the assembly there was a greatly wealthy brahmin named Stainless Wondrous Light. Right there in the gathering, he could understand subtle matters and clearly comprehend the teacher's Dharma. He was intelligent and eloquent, delighted in hearing much, cultivated and honored the ten wholesome ways, and had faith and deep respect for the Three Jewels. Joyfully leaping with delight, he thought: "All sentient beings who cultivate goodness as the cause obtain immeasurable wealth and abundant necessities. I shall cultivate this as well."

Then the great brahmin Stainless Wondrous Light rose, joined his palms, and circled the Buddha seven times. With various flowers, perfumed ointments, powdered incense, and so forth, he made offerings to the World-Honored One, and also offered the Buddha various garments, pearls, and jeweled necklaces worth hundreds of thousands, presenting them to the Buddha. Bowing his head to the Buddha's feet, he said to the Buddha: "World-Honored One, may you stir great compassion; may you accept my meal." Three times he beseeched in this way.

Then the World-Honored One silently accepted the invitation. When the great brahmin Stainless Wondrous Light saw that the World-Honored One had silently accepted, he quickly returned home. After one night, he prepared a great many fine foods, complete in the six flavors. Once the food and drink were ready, he adorned his house, with pavilions, bathing pools, and abundant colorful silks. Flowers, incense, powdered incense, all kinds of fragrances, and perfumed body oils—none of the many offerings were lacking. Immediately, the brahmin and the others took up flowers and banners, played various music, and together with their relatives went to the Immaculate Garden beside the Pool of Radiant Treasure to welcome and invite the World-Honored One.

When they arrived, they said to the Buddha: "World-Honored One, the time for the meal has come; the food and drink are all prepared. May the World-Honored One, together with the great assembly, come to my house and accept my offerings."

At that time, the World-Honored One observed the assembly and said to the Brahmin Wugou Miaoguang, "Excellent, excellent! May it be as you wish." He then told the entire gathering, along with the other celestial beings, that they should all go there. Thereupon the World-Honored One rose from his seat, and together with the great assembly—Bodhisattvas, Shravakas, the eight classes of gods and dragons, humans and non-humans, as well as the kings, ministers, and their retinues, numbering immeasurable hundreds of thousands—all gathered in reverent circumambulation, and proceeded to the home of the Brahmin Wugou Miaoguang.

At that time, the World-Honored One's body, naturally golden in color, emitted various lights and immeasurable marks, transforming into nets of light of many kinds that illuminated all Buddha-lands in the ten directions. These lights also illuminated the assemblies at the sites of enlightenment of all the Buddhas in those Buddha-lands, manifesting as various offerings. After illuminating all that, the light returned and entered the pores of Shakyamuni's body. Then the Brahmin Wugou Miaoguang and his family, with single-minded reverence, wishing to make offerings to the Buddha, swept and adorned the road, making it pure and clean.

At that time, the World-Honored One, together with the great assembly—gods, dragons, yakshas, gandharvas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, mahoragas, Indra, Brahma kings, the four guardian kings of the world, Maheshvara, Narayana, and hundreds of thousands of others—reverently circumambulated and proceeded there. As the World-Honored One walked along the road, ahead in the middle of the path there was a garden called Anle (Peace and Bliss). Within that garden was a great old stupa, extremely damaged, surrounded by thorns and dense thickets of grass and trees, hard and blocked up like a mound.

As the World-Honored One approached that stupa, flames blazed all around the mound, and lights of various colors and appearances shone forth. From near and far, all could see that broken stupa. From within the light came a wonderful voice praising, "Excellent, excellent! Shakyamuni Buddha's pure and subtle auspicious marks are immeasurable and beyond reckoning. That Brahmin Wugou Miaoguang has invited the Tathagata, and now a rare and inconceivable great event is manifesting."

Then Shakyamuni Tathagata, circumambulating the broken old mound-stupa, wishing to make an offering, removed his own garments and adornments and covered that old stupa mound. Having finished covering it, he wept, tears falling like rain, and further contemplated the appearance of the relics and the appearance of all Buddhas of the ten directions. Instantly the relics emerged from the stupa and came to rest in the palms of all Buddhas of the ten directions. Then all the Buddhas of the ten directions also wept, and their bodies emitted light that illuminated the old stupa, forming nets of light, making it luminous inside and out, pure and unequaled. After that, the light and the Buddha relics returned into the stupa. At that time, the entire assembly all wept, amazed and marveling at this unprecedented sight.

Then in the assembly there was a great yaksha lord named Vajrapani, his body blazing with light, his arms straight and well-formed, soft and lustrous like an elephant's trunk. Holding a golden vajra in his hand, he swiftly approached the World-Honored One, bowed his head at the Buddha's feet, and said to the Buddha: "World-Honored One! Why are these rare auspicious signs manifesting? And why do all Buddhas of the ten directions weep and emit illuminating light? I pray the Tathagata will explain this for me, resolving the doubts of the assembly."

Then the World-Honored One told the great yaksha lord Vajrapani: "This is the whole-body relic of all Tathagatas, gathered in this stupa. And the Dharmakaya heart-seal dharani of the true Dharma, in the form of likenesses of all Tathagatas as numerous as hundreds of thousands of kotis of sesame seeds, is also in this stupa. You should know, Vajrapani, that this dharani of the true Dharma heart-seal, with Buddha images as numerous as sesame seeds, abides in this stupa, and because of it, the whole-body relics of hundreds of thousands of kotis of Tathagatas also abide here. If this dharani of the true Dharma heart-seal is in this stupa, then the eighty-four thousand Dharma doors are also in it, and the predictions of Buddhahood bestowed upon the topknots of ninety-nine hundred thousand kotis of Tathagatas are also in it. You should know, Vajrapani, that the merit of this stupa of all Tathagata relics and this dharani of the true Dharma heart-seal is immeasurable, boundless, inconceivable, and beyond praise. You should know, Vajrapani, that through this dharani of the true Dharma casket-seal heart, all true Dharma and all merits are able to grow and be perfected."

When the World-Honored One taught this Dharma, the great assembly heard the Dharma with joy, eliminated defilements, and attained purity of the Dharma-eye. Among them, some attained the fruit of stream-entry, once-returning, non-returning, and arhatship, and the vehicle of solitary realization. Some realized the first ground, second ground, and so on up to the tenth ground. Some among them perfected the six paramitas. Some received the prediction of enlightenment. Some attained the stage of non-retrogression. At that time, the Brahmin Wugou Miaoguang, right there in the assembly, freed himself from all afflictions, eliminated obstructive defilements, and obtained the five superknowledges.

Then the great yaksha lord Vajrapani, witnessing these rare manifestations of sovereign superknowledges, leaped with joy, praised the unprecedented, and said to the Buddha: "World-Honored One! This dharani of the true Dharma seal-heart has such vast benefit. If sentient beings write it out, adorn it, receive and uphold it, read and recite it, respect and praise it, what fruits will they obtain? I pray the Buddha will explain."

Then the World-Honored One told the great yaksha Vajrapani: "Listen carefully, listen carefully! I will explain for you. If monks, nuns, laymen, and laywomen receive and uphold, read and recite, write out, and respect this dharani of the true Dharma seal-heart, they will obtain the accumulation of merit and roots of goodness equal to the Buddha-field of Tathagatas as numerous as ninety-nine hundred thousand kotis of sesame seeds, and they will also encounter and serve those Tathagatas and receive the prediction of enlightenment. Why is that? Because this dharani of the true Dharma seal-heart was proclaimed together by Tathagatas as numerous as ninety-nine hundred thousand kotis of nayutas of sesame seeds. If someone receives and upholds, reads and recites this sutra of the true Dharma seal-heart dharani, they will immediately encounter Tathagatas as numerous as ninety-nine hundred thousand kotis of nayutas of sesame seeds in the ten directions. If monks, nuns, laymen, laywomen, men of good family, and women of good family, day after day, respectfully make offerings of flowers, incense, powdered incense, garlands, ointments, fine clothing, and adornments to this sutra of the true Dharma seal-heart dharani, the merit they obtain will be no different from making offerings to Tathagatas as numerous as ninety-nine hundred thousand kotis of sesame seeds in the ten directions, and they will also obtain from each Tathagata vast and magnificent adornments, and obtain immeasurable heaps of the seven treasures as great as Mount Sumeru."

Then the entire assembly—gods, dragons, yakshas, gandharvas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, mahoragas, humans and non-humans, and all the great multitude—were all amazed and doubtful, praising the unprecedented: "This rotten, broken stupa, constantly choked by thorns, filled densely with grass and trees like a mound—today the Tathagata, with great compassion and sovereign superknowledges, manifests such rare auspicious signs, a wonderful stupa of seven treasures, inconceivable!" Then the great assembly praised without end.

At that time, in the assembly, the great yaksha lord Vajrapani said to the Buddha: "World-Honored One! How is it that this broken mound-stupa has transformed and manifested such wonderful adornments?" Then the Buddha told Vajrapani: "Apart from this broken mound-stupa, there is no other stupa of seven treasures and wonderful adornments. Why is that? It manifests according to consciousness. Some see a stupa of thorns and a mound; some see a wonderful adornment of seven treasures. Moreover, the stupa that holds the whole-body relics of all Tathagatas of the ten directions, manifested by all Buddhas, is adorned with hundreds of precious seven treasures; but sentient beings with evil karma see a broken stupa of thorns. You should know, great yaksha lord Vajrapani, that in the final period of the last age, when sentient beings' karmic offenses are deep and heavy, they plant no roots of goodness, widely commit unwholesome karma of the three evil paths, and by this cause are born in an age without Buddhas. They also constantly do not hear the names of Buddhas, and forever remain far from even the name of the Sangha and the Dharma. Such things are true and not false; therefore all Buddhas and I weep and lament.

Furthermore, Vajrapani, if the true Dharma is about to perish and abides in this stupa, all Tathagata whole-body relics are also hidden within this stupa, protected by the Dharma proclaimed by all Tathagatas."

Then the great yaksha lord Vajrapani said to the Buddha: "World-Honored One! How do sentient beings plant goodness? How is the true Dharma placed in this stupa?" Then the World-Honored One told Vajrapani: "If someone has faith and understanding, receives and upholds, reads and recites, writes out, expounds for others, and with various adornments places it in a stupa, that is placing the whole-body relics of all Tathagatas and hiding them in this stupa. They also obtain the secret dharani of all Tathagatas as protection, and obtain the protection of the stupas of Buddhas as numerous as ninety-nine sesame-seed measures of Tathagatas in the ten directions, and obtain the protection of the topknot-eye stupas of all Tathagatas. If someone, using the seven treasures according to the Dharma, consecrates and carves images of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, adorns them in various ways, and places them in a stupa; and further uses parasols, wheels, jewel nets, bells, chimes, and various wonderful decorations, bells, chimes, cymbals, and other implements, flowers, incense, garlands, clothing, food, drink, and all offerings; and further consecrates them with the true Dharma of all Tathagatas, protecting and purifying them in truth, diligently and constantly free from laziness; and further, when this stupa ages and deteriorates, repairs and adorns it again with various offerings, with sincere faith and respect, without doubt or slander—such a person will obtain unsurpassed enlightenment. If someone circumambulates this stupa one or two times or makes a single bow, they will be liberated from the offenses of the uninterrupted hell and will certainly attain the stage of non-retrogression, and ultimately the fruit of Buddhahood. Wherever this stupa is, the images of all Buddhas of the ten directions are also there. Furthermore, wherever this stupa is, by the power of the protection of all Tathagatas, that land will be free in all four directions from poisonous dragons, hail, wind, rain, untimely harm, and all fears. That place will also be free from poisonous insects and ants—poisonous snakes, wolves, rats, locusts, vipers, scorpions, yellow wasps, black bees, and even centipedes and hundred-legged creatures will all stay away. Furthermore, that land will be free from fierce tigers, wolves, and lions, and birds and beasts cannot harm it. That land will also be free from all disasters and disturbances, free from yakshas, rakshasas, bhutas, vetadas, and free from the harm of pishachas and mad ghosts. It will also be free from malaria, sores, swellings, paralysis, hemorrhoids, fistula, white leprosy, scabies, ringworm—all diseases cannot harm it. If someone sees this jewel stupa, rejoices, and praises and bows, all harms cannot affect them. Furthermore, in that land, cattle, horses, sheep, dogs, and all kinds of animals, as well as men and women, will not die prematurely, and there will be no fear of knives, weapons, staffs, fire, or water. That land will also be free from famine, plague, and all kinds of fears. That place will always be protected by the four great heavenly kings, and the twenty-eight great yaksha lords will constantly protect it with hidden forms, and the thirty-three heavens, the twenty-eight constellations, Rahu and other stars, and even the sun and moon will move in order day and night. If dragon kings constantly observe it, rain will fall in season. Whether beings of the desire realm, form realm, or formless realm, all gods will descend to this stupa three times to bow and make offerings. All Tathagatas will respectfully honor, remember, and contemplate it. If someone constantly repairs and adorns Buddha stupas and images, whether made of wood, stone, earth, painted, gold, silver, or brass, and writes out and adorns this sutra of the true Dharma seal-heart dharani, and protects it according to the true Dharma of all Tathagatas, and then places it in a jewel stupa; and further adorns the four stairways of this jewel stupa, with wheels, banners, and streamers, bells hanging all around, seven-jewel nets high and wide, large and small, according to one's wish, with various adornments; and further consecrates it with the true Dharma of Tathagatas of the ten directions, and performs the protection methods of all sages and worthies to protect and uphold it, and then widely makes offerings of various flowers, incense, food, drink, and even garlands with sincere reverence—such a person will obtain immeasurable merit."

Then in the assembly, the great yaksha lord Vajrapani again said to the Buddha: "World-Honored One! For what reason does writing out, receiving and upholding, making offerings to, and respecting this dharani of the true Dharma seal-heart bring such immeasurable merit?" Then the World-Honored One told Vajrapani: "This is the secret casket-seal heart dharani of the whole-body relics of all Tathagatas of the Dharma realm; therefore it brings such immeasurable merit." Then the great yaksha lord Vajrapani, hearing the Buddha's teaching of immeasurable merit, joyfully accepted it with faith, and again said to the Buddha: "World-Honored One! May the Buddha in compassion proclaim this Dharma; we delight in hearing it." Then the World-Honored One told Vajrapani: "Listen carefully, all of you; I will now explain for you. This dharani of the true Dharma seal-heart was proclaimed together by all Buddhas of the past, future, and present. If one has faith and upholds it, respectfully makes offerings, and even realizes the fruits of shravaka and solitary realization, and the tenth ground, the Dharma body, reward body, and transformation body—therefore it is called the whole-body true Dharma secret casket-seal."

Then the World-Honored One immediately spoke the mantra:

At that time, after the World-Honored One had spoken this mantra, he said to Vajrapani: "Now this Heart Dharani of the Secret Casket of the Whole Body has been proclaimed by all the Tathagatas everywhere. Throughout the ten directions, in each and every direction, there are Tathagatas as numerous as ninety-nine sesame seeds, and hundreds of thousands of kotis of nayutas of Buddhas and Tathagatas. Hearing this teaching, they all come here and together praise it, saying: 'Excellent, excellent, Shakyamuni! You are able to proclaim the Heart Dharani of the Casket of Right Dharma, and to cause it to spread widely throughout Jambudvipa. You also cause all sentient beings to enshrine the whole-body relics within this stupa.' For this reason, all the Tathagatas of the ten directions protect it with their samadhis. Moreover, if there are people who receive, uphold, read, recite, explain, and copy this Sutra of the Heart Dharani of the Secret Casket of the Whole-Body Relics, and who adorn a stupa with gold, silver, sandalwood, and colored carvings and enshrine it within, all the Tathagatas of the ten directions will constantly come here and protect them."

At that time, when the World-Honored One proclaimed this Heart Dharani of the Casket of Right Dharma, from within that old, broken mound there appeared a wonderful stupa of the seven treasures, adorned with a spire, banners, and all manner of ornaments. The great assembly of humans and heavenly beings all saw it, and it remained visible as before for a long time. Then all the great bodhisattvas in that assembly, together with the assembly of shravakas, the eight classes of devas and nagas, and humans and non-humans, witnessing this marvel, were all filled with joy.

At that time, when the World-Honored One taught this Dharma, the great assembly—the great yaksha lord Vajrapani, the stainless radiant great brahmin, together with the bodhisattvas, the great shravakas, devas, nagas, yakshas, gandharvas, asuras, garudas, kimnaras, mahoragas, humans and non-humans, kings, ministers, elders, and householders—all the great assembly, having heard what the Buddha taught, single-mindedly accepted it with faith, rejoiced, and withdrew.
