> Duke Fu, during the Xining era, governed Bozhou. He invited Zen Master Yong from Huayan Zen Monastery in Yingzhou and received instruction in the essentials of the mind. After retiring, he lived in Luoyang and expressed his realization through verse, sending it to Master Yong's teacher, Zen Master Yuanzhao of Suzhou. The verse read: "I personally saw Master Yong and entered deeply into awakening, Through his guidance, I inherited the teacher's mind. Though Southeast's rivers and mountains are said to be far, I face the radiant light and subtle sound directly." He also included this letter: "I have devoted myself to the ancestral path for a long time. I have often lamented not meeting a clear-eyed person to open my ignorance. Though I had long heard of your great virtue, I had no opportunity to pay my respects. Last year, I was fortunate to be appointed to Bozhou, which borders Yingzhou. Through my fellow townsman Zhang, I was able to invite Master Yong to visit. We gathered for nearly a month, and through his compassionate and skillful means, I found a place of insight. As the summer retreat approached at the end of the fourth month, he returned to Yingzhou. Regarding polishing and refining \[my understanding\], I have made little progress. Weakness and illness follow one another; my dullness makes it hard to enter. As the ancient Master Guling said, 'Unexpectedly, in old age, I have heard the ultimate matter.' I see this in myself today. What a blessing! What a blessing! Though I have attained the Dharma from Master Yong, the source truly comes from you, old master. The lineage is quite clear. I wish to uphold it as well. I humbly hope you will extend your compassion, accept me, and guide me from afar—bringing me to where I have not yet arrived. Then how would I differ from Pang Yun under Nanyue or Pei Xiu under Baizhang?" Duke Fu, having reached the highest rank a minister could attain, suddenly awakened to this path—truly a person of immeasurable stature. Moreover, he could discuss the Dharma meaning with Yuanzhao, explain the lineage, and compare himself to the Ancient Master Guling who heard the ultimate matter in old age. How could this be deception?
