> Monks' Rule 6: Receiving Robes from an Unrelated Laywoman

> A person who has committed a serious offense but then repeats it: if they first do not relinquish the robe, then wash, dye, and beat it, they commit three offenses. If they instruct others to do so, they commit a minor offense. If one speaks honestly and truthfully: this refers to a donor asking a monk, "Is your practice good?" If it is genuinely good and one says it is good, this incurs a transgression of falling, because it involves self-praise<note>this is a transgression of falling due to wrong livelihood</note>. If it is not good and one says it is good, this is a serious offense. This does not concern material things. Regarding one item from the robe: the Ninth Rule states, "When begging for robe material, whether it is one piece of the robe." In the commentary, it seems to combine this into one sentence. The rest, as mentioned in the miscellaneous section, refers to the miscellaneous chapter. Combining the previous conditions—such as loss, theft, drifting away—and additionally when the robe is damaged, one may beg. Combined with the previous five conditions, begging is permissible. Regarding seeking offerings through improper means: the Fifth Rule states, if one knows that this monk is begging for money for improper deeds, yet still gives to him, both parties commit an offense.
