> The Buddha was staying in the land of Śrāvastī. Many of the Licchavi people engaged in immoral conduct, wearing robes made of pure white wool. The group of six monks imitated them and made bedding from white wool, which drew criticism. Because of this, this precept was established. The circumstances are the same as the previous one—though white and black differ, both are not in accordance with the Dharma. The criticism is the same, so it is treated alike. In the Ten Recitations Vinaya, this is not considered pure white; it refers to bedding made from a mixture of three kinds of wool, which is not an offense. For pure black wool, if one adds an extra ounce of black wool among the three kinds, it is a falling offense—because it is precious. Adding an extra ounce of white wool is a minor offense—because it is considered theft. Adding variegated wool is not an offense. Reducing by one ounce is a falling offense. Furthermore, only in the Four-Part Vinaya is it specified that making bedding entirely from pure white wool incurs a forfeiture offense. The Buddha allowed mixing three kinds of wool to avoid the fault of pure whiteness. For a bedding made with two parts black, three parts white, and four parts variegated—meaning one needs two parts black wool, one part white wool, and one part coarse variegated wool—the total becomes four parts. The "two parts black" refers to the first and second parts being black. The third part, being one part white, is called "three parts white." The fourth part, being one part variegated, is called "four parts variegated." It is not that the white is three parts and the variegated is four parts.
