Praise to Guanyin by Emperor Taizong of the Great Ming
The Great Sage, the Free and Compassionate Guanyin, Responds to countless beings without end. With unobstructed powers, dwelling nowhere, Great compassion and kindness, pitying all living beings.
The six senses intermingle, wisdom profound, Through hearing, reflection, and practice, entering samadhi. Saving beings according to their needs, manifesting freely, Like a single moon reflected in a thousand rivers.
Each river with the moon, each river bright, The light shines from one source, never two. Ordinary people see only with their eyes, But the Bodhisattva sees sound with their sight.
They are hindered by what they perceive, Thus unable to use this wondrous power. The Great Being's eyes see without seeing, Ears, nose, tongue, body, and mind are the same.
To observe in this way, to see thus, Never falling into delusion or false thought. When perceptions from senses are stilled, Even this wondrous form is no more.
Whoever can penetrate this emptiness of the ten directions, Together attains the ocean of perfect samadhi. Body and mind boundless, pervading all worlds, Unmoving from the source, responding to all needs.
Like myriad plants meeting the spring breeze, All kinds of sprouts naturally arise. Flourishing and thriving, each growing strong, Becoming branches, leaves, and bearing fruit.
Sour, salty, sweet, bitter, green, and red, All fulfill wishes as desired. This present dharma is inconceivable, Not clinging to appearances is true.
A single hair pervades the emptiness of the dharma realm, Cleansing the five turbidities and all distress. Shattering mountains of obstacles, all swept away, Countless realms of suffering, all escaped.
The Saha world becomes a city of joy, Innumerable wondrous forms fully revealed.
Taking the vast emptiness as body and form, A jeweled crown gathering five Sumerus. Taking the four great seas as the mouth, The sun and moon's light as the two eyes.
All phenomena as a garland of jewels, Vowing the highest, endowed with eloquence. Manifesting the fourteen fearless merits, Skillfully displaying thirty-two response bodies.
For all beings to behold and revere, Widely applying the Buddhas' compassionate hearts. Body becoming one with all beings, Responding to contact, moving with feeling.
If you see me with right view, I see freedom with no view. Like mirror reflecting mirror, valley echoing sound, All is clear, all is natural.
Attaining this samadhi transcends the ordinary, One dharma contains all Buddhas. Opening the treasury of compassion and merit, Revealing widely the door of skillful means.
All beings of the future in this virtuous age, Will attain enlightenment, reaching true awakening.
