> Chapter 22: Protection by the Devas and Yakshas

> At that time, the World-Honored One said to the Great Goddess of Fortune: "If there are pure-hearted men or women of faith who wish to offer inconceivable, vast, and subtle offerings to all Buddhas of the past, future, and present, and who wish to understand the profound practices of the Buddhas of the three times, they should, with unwavering sincerity, widely proclaim and spread this King of Sutras wherever it is found—whether in cities, towns, villages, or mountain wilds—for the benefit of all beings. Those who listen to the Dharma should set aside wandering thoughts and focus their ears and minds with care." Then the World-Honored One, for the sake of that goddess and the great assembly, spoke these verses:

> If you wish to offer the Buddhas An inconceivable array of offerings, And truly understand the Tathāgatas' Profound and subtle realms— Wherever this supreme \*Sūtra of Golden Light\* Is being taught, You should go to that place, To where the teacher dwells. This sūtra is inconceivable; It gives rise to all good qualities. From the boundless great ocean of suffering, It liberates all living beings. I see this king of sūtras: Its beginning, middle, and end are all excellent. Its depth cannot be fathomed, No simile can match it. Even if one took the Ganges' sands, The dust of the great earth, the waters of the sea, The vastness of space, or mountains of stone— None could illustrate even a fraction of it. If you wish to enter the profound Dharma-realm, You should first listen to this sūtra. It is a shrine of Dharma-nature itself, Deeply and perfectly established. Within this shrine, You will see me, the Sage, With a pleasing voice and wonderful tones, Expounding this very sūtra. Through this, for kalpas beyond number— Countless and inconceivable— One is born among gods and humans, Always enjoying supreme and exquisite bliss. Those who listen to this sūtra Should think in this way: "I have obtained an inconceivable, Boundless accumulation of merit." Even if a great mass of fire Filled a hundred yojanas, To hear this king of sūtras, One would cross it directly, without complaint. Having reached that place, And heard this sūtra, One's evil deeds are extinguished, And all bad dreams are dispelled. Ominous stars, strange portents, Sorcery, evil spirits, and the like— When one hears this sūtra, All such evils are abandoned. One should prepare a lofty, excellent seat, Pure and wondrous, like a lotus flower. The Dharma teacher sits upon it, Like a great dragon in repose. Seated there, He teaches this profound sūtra, Writes it, recites it, And explains its meaning. When the teacher leaves that seat And journeys to other places, Within that lofty seat, Miraculous manifestations appear in many forms: Sometimes the teacher's image Still appears upon the seat; Sometimes the World-Honored One is seen, Along with all the bodhisattvas. Sometimes a manifestation of Samantabhadra appears, Or that of Mañjuśrī; Sometimes Maitreya, the Honored One, Is seen sitting upon the high seat. Sometimes strange and wondrous signs appear, Along with celestial images; One glimpses their noble forms, Then suddenly they vanish. All blessings are fulfilled, Whatever one does succeeds; Merit becomes completely perfected— Thus the World-Honored One declared. This supreme sūtra, renowned by name, Can extinguish all mental afflictions. Enemies from other lands are overcome; In battle, one always gains victory. Bad dreams entirely disappear, And all poisons and harms are dissolved. The offenses of body, speech, and mind Are eradicated by the power of this sūtra. Throughout this Jambudvīpa, Its fame spreads everywhere. All grudges and resentments Are entirely set aside. Even if enemies should come, Hearing its name, they retreat and disperse. Without need to raise arms, Both armies rejoice in peace. Brahmā, King Śakra, the lords, The Four Guardian Kings of the world, Vajrapāṇi, the yakṣas, And the great general Sureśvara— The dragon king of the Anavatapta lake, And Sāgara as well; The music-loving kinnaras, Garuda, lord of feathered beings— The great goddess of eloquence, And the goddess of great fortune— These leading deities, Each commanding their celestial hosts, Always make offerings to the Buddhas, To the inconceivable Dharma treasure, Ever generating joyful hearts, And revering this sūtra with respect. These assemblies of gods All contemplate together, Surveying those who cultivate merit, And declare with one voice: "We should recognize these beings As ones of great fortune. Through roots of goodness and diligent effort, They will be reborn among us gods in the future. To hear this profound sūtra, They come here with reverence, Offering to the shrine of Dharma, Honoring the true Dharma itself. Out of compassion for sentient beings, They perform great benefit; For this profound scripture, They have become vessels of the Dharma treasure. Those who enter this Dharma gate Can enter into Dharma-nature itself. This \*Golden Light\* — With utmost sincerity, they should listen and receive it. Such persons have previously made offerings To countless hundreds of thousands of Buddhas. Through those roots of goodness, They now come to hear this sūtra." Thus the lords of the gods, The goddess of great eloquence, The goddess of good fortune, And the hosts of the Four Kings— Countless yakṣa multitudes, Fierce and possessed of supernatural powers— From their four directions, They constantly come to offer protection. The sun, the moon, Lord Śakra, The gods of wind, fire, and water, Viṣṇu of mighty shoulders, Yama, Sarasvatī, and others— All the world-protecting deities, Fierce and awe-inspiring, Protect those who uphold this sūtra, Never leaving them, day or night. The mighty yakṣa kings, Nārāyaṇa the sovereign, With Sureśvara at their head, Twenty-eight yakṣa chiefs, And hundreds of thousands of other yakṣas, Possessed of supernatural powers and great strength, Constantly come—especially in fearful places— To protect such persons. Vajrapāṇi, king of yakṣas, With five hundred followers, And the great bodhisattva assemblies, Constantly come to protect them. Ratnapāṇi, the yakṣa king, Along with Pūrṇabhadra, Kumbhīra of the wilderness, Piṇḍola the yellow— These yakṣa kings, Each with five hundred attendants, Seeing those who listen to this sūtra, All come together to protect them. Citrasena, the gandharva, Vetāḍa the ever-victorious, Muktākaṇṭha and Nīlakaṇṭha, Along with Bṛṣa the king— The great most-excellent Mahākāla, Suvarṇakuṇḍala, Pāñcika and Ajapāda, And the great Bhaga— Cūḍā and Dharaṇa, And the monkey king; Sūcīroman and Mitravinda, Keśin—all come to protect. Mahācūḍa and Nakula, Candana and Kāmarūpa, Śaila and Himavant, And Satagiri as well— All possessed of great supernatural powers, Fierce and mighty in strength, Seeing those who uphold this sūtra, All come to offer their protection. Anavatapta, And Sāgara, Mucilinda with nāga-leaves, Nanda and Upananda— Among hundreds of thousands of nāgas, These possess supernatural power and virtue. Together they protect those who uphold the sūtra, Never leaving them, day or night. Bālin, Rāhu, Vemacitra, Mūrdhaja, Śambara, Skandha and Nandī— And other kings of the asuras, Along with countless celestial hosts, Great in strength and valor, All come to protect such persons. Hārītī, the goddess mother, With five hundred yakṣas, While such persons sleep, Constantly comes to protect them. Caṇḍa, Caṇḍālī, The yakṣa youth Caṇḍikā, Kuntī, Kūṭadanta, And those who devour vital essence— All these hosts of spirits, Great in power and supernatural ability, Constantly protect those who uphold the sūtra, Never leaving them, day or night. Foremost is Sarasvatī, With countless goddesses; Lakṣmī at their head, With all their attendant retinues— The goddess of this great earth, The gods of fruits, gardens, and groves, The gods of trees, rivers, And the shrine deities— All these celestial beings, Their hearts filled with great joy, All come to protect Those who recite this sūtra. Those who uphold this sūtra Gain increased lifespan, vitality, and radiance, Aura of majesty and merit, Adorned with excellent characteristics. When stars show ominous changes, Or misfortunes befall such persons, Or evil signs appear in dreams— All these are completely dispelled. The goddess of this great earth, Steadfast and powerful, Through the power of this sūtra, Is always filled with the flavor of Dharma. Should the earth's nourishment flow downward, Beyond a hundred yojanas, The earth goddess causes it to rise again, Moistening and enriching the land. This earth, sixty times eight hundred million Yojanas in depth, Down to the diamond foundation— Its nourishing essence is all caused to rise. Through listening to this king of sūtras, One gains a great accumulation of merit, Which enables all the celestial hosts To receive its benefits. It further gives the gods Power and radiant light; They rejoice in constant ease, And cast off all signs of decline. Throughout this southern continent, The gods of groves, fruits, and crops, Through the power of this sūtra, Are always glad at heart. Grain and harvests all ripen; Everywhere there are exquisite flowers; Fruits flourish abundantly, Filling the entire earth. All the fruit trees And every garden and grove Produce marvelous blossoms, Their fragrance ever rich and sweet. All grasses and trees Put forth subtle and wonderful flowers, And bear delicious fruits, Filling every place. Throughout this Jambudvīpa, Countless nāga maidens, Their hearts filled with great joy, All enter the ponds together. They plant utpala lotuses And pundarīka blossoms— Blue and white lotuses alike— Filling all the pools. Through the power of this sūtra, The sky is pure and cloudless; Mists and fogs are dispelled, And darkness turns to light. The sun rises, radiating a thousand beams, With flawless, clear brilliance. Through the power of this king of sūtras, Its light encircles the four continents. The majestic power of this sūtra Aids the sons of heaven; With Jambu River gold, They build their palaces. When the sun deity first rises, He beholds this continent with joy, And ever with his great radiance, Illumines it all around. Within this great earth, Every lotus pond, When the sunlight reaches it in due season, Blossoms fully open. Throughout this Jambudvīpa, Fields, orchards, fruits, and herbs All ripen to perfection, Filling the entire earth. Through the power of this sūtra, Wherever sun and moon shine, The stars keep their proper courses, And wind and rain come in season. Throughout this Jambudvīpa, Every realm enjoys prosperity and joy. Wherever this sūtra is found, Its excellence surpasses all other places. Wherever this \*Golden Light\*, This sacred scripture, spreads, If there are those who teach and recite it, They all obtain the blessings described above."

> At that time, the Great Goddess of Auspiciousness and the celestial beings, having heard the Buddha's words, were filled with great joy. With unified hearts, they vowed to protect this king of sutras and all who uphold it, ensuring that they would be free from worry and distress, and always dwell in peace and happiness.
