### 拈花

> Holding Up a Flower

王荊公問佛慧泉禪師云。禪家所謂世尊拈花。出在何典。泉云。藏經亦不載。公曰。余頃在翰苑。偶見大梵天王問佛決疑經三卷。因閱之。經文所載甚詳。梵王至靈山。以金色波羅花獻佛。舍身為牀座。請佛為眾生說法。世尊登座。拈花示眾。人天百萬。悉皆罔措。獨有金色頭陀。破顏微笑。世尊云。吾有正法眼藏涅槃妙心實相無相。分付摩訶大迦葉。此經多談帝王事佛請問。所以秘藏。世無聞者。

> Wang Jinggong asked the Chan Master Fo Hui Quan, "The Chan school speaks of the World-Honored One picking up a flower. Which scripture does this come from?" Quan replied, "The canon of scriptures does not record it." Wang said, "Some time ago, while I was in the Hanlin Academy, I happened to come across the \*Sutra of the Great Brahma Heavenly King Asking the Buddha to Resolve Doubts\*, in three volumes. Reading it, I found the account in the sutra to be very detailed. The Brahma King came to the Vulture Peak and offered the Buddha a golden \*utpala\* flower, then laid down his own body as a seat, requesting the Buddha to teach the Dharma for the sake of all beings. The World-Honored One ascended the seat, picked up the flower, and showed it to the assembly. The hundreds of thousands of humans and gods were all at a loss. Only the golden-robed elder broke into a slight smile. The World-Honored One said, 'I have the treasury of the true Dharma eye, the wondrous mind of Nirvana, the true form of no-form. I entrust it to Mahakashyapa.' This sutra speaks extensively of matters concerning emperors and kings worshiping and inquiring of the Buddha. Therefore, it was kept secret and is unknown in the world."
