The Great Compassionate Heart Dhāraṇī of the Thousand-Armed, Thousand-Eyed Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva, also known as the Great Compassion Mantra, was translated by the eminent Tang dynasty monk Amoghavajra. This scripture belongs to the esoteric Buddhist canon and originates from the *Sūtra of the Dhāraṇī of the Vast, Perfect, and Unobstructed Great Compassionate Heart of the Thousand-Armed, Thousand-Eyed Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva* translated by Bhagavaddharma, with Amoghavajra’s version being more concise and essential. Its core content consists of the eighty-four-line Great Compassion Divine Mantra, which expounds the compassionate vows and salvific merits of Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva. This mantra is revered as a daily essential practice in Chinese Buddhism, possessing the power to purify karmic obstacles and fulfill virtuous aspirations. It is a vital scripture of Avalokiteśvara devotion and holds an extremely high status within Buddhism.

Great Compassion Dharani of Thousand-Armed Thousand-Eyed Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva

Translated by the Tang Dynasty Tripitaka Master Amoghavajra

I bow to the great compassionate Avalokiteshvara, Whose vow is profound and whose form is majestic. With a thousand arms, you protect and uphold all, With a thousand eyes, you see and illuminate everything.

In truthful words, you speak the secret teachings; From a mind of non-action, compassion arises. Swiftly fulfill all our hopes and wishes, Forever eradicate all our misdeeds and faults.

May dragons, gods, and all sages offer their compassionate protection, May the hundreds and thousands of meditative states be swiftly cultivated. May our bodies become pillars of light, May our minds become treasuries of spiritual power.

Wash away the dust of worldly toil, vowing to save all beings, Transcend and realize the path to Enlightenment, the gate of skillful means. I now recite and vow to take refuge, May all my wishes be perfectly fulfilled.

Homage to the great compassionate Avalokiteshvara, May I quickly understand all teachings.

Homage to the great compassionate Avalokiteshvara, May I soon attain the eye of Wisdom.

Homage to the great compassionate Avalokiteshvara, May I swiftly liberate all beings.

Homage to the great compassionate Avalokiteshvara, May I soon master skillful means.

Homage to the great compassionate Avalokiteshvara, May I quickly board the boat of Prajñā.

Homage to the great compassionate Avalokiteshvara, May I soon cross over the sea of suffering.

Homage to the great compassionate Avalokiteshvara, May I swiftly attain the path of discipline and meditation.

Homage to the great compassionate Avalokiteshvara, May I soon ascend the mountain of Nirvana.

Homage to the great compassionate Avalokiteshvara, May I quickly dwell in the abode of non-action.

Homage to the great compassionate Avalokiteshvara, May I soon unite with the body of true reality.

If I turn toward the Mountain of Blades, the mountain itself crumbles. If I turn toward the Boiling Cauldron, the cauldron itself is extinguished. If I turn toward the Hells, the hells themselves dry up. If I turn toward the Hungry Ghosts, the ghosts themselves are filled. If I turn toward the Asuras, their malice itself is tamed. If I turn toward the Animals, they themselves gain great wisdom.

Having made this vow, sincerely recite my name, and also single-mindedly remember my original teacher, Amitabha Buddha. Then, you should recite this mantra. Recite it fully five times in one night, and it will eradicate immeasurable eons of heavy karma from birth and death within your being.

Homage to Amitabha Tathagata, Homage to the Great Bodhisattva Guanyin.

The Bodhisattva Guanyin then addressed the Buddha once more: "World-Honored One, if any human or heavenly being recites and upholds the verses of the Great Compassion, then at the time of their death, all the Buddhas of the ten directions will come to offer their hands. To whichever Buddha-land they wish to be reborn, according to their vow, they shall attain rebirth there."

She further addressed the Buddha: "World-Honored One, if any being who recites and upholds the Great Compassion Mantra were to fall into the three lower realms, I vow not to attain perfect enlightenment. If a reciter of the Great Compassion Mantra is not reborn in a Buddha-land, I vow not to attain perfect enlightenment. If a reciter of the Great Compassion Mantra does not attain immeasurable meditative states and eloquence of wisdom, I vow not to attain perfect enlightenment. If a reciter of the Great Compassion Mantra, in their present life, does not have all their wishes fulfilled, then it cannot be called the Great Compassion Dharani. The only exceptions are those who are not virtuous or whose minds are not sincere.

If any woman is weary and despises her female body and wishes to become a man, by reciting and upholding the verses of the Great Compassion Dharani, if her female body is not transformed into a male body, I vow not to attain perfect enlightenment. However, if they harbor even the slightest doubt, they will certainly not achieve their wish.

If any beings have encroached upon or damaged the food, drink, or wealth of a permanent monastic community, even a thousand Buddhas appearing in the world would not grant them absolution; even if they could repent, it would not eradicate the offense. But now, by reciting the Great Compassion Mantra, it can be eradicated. If one has encroached upon or used the food, drink, or wealth of a permanent monastic community, one must confess before teachers of the ten directions before the offense can be eradicated. But now, when reciting the Great Compassion Dharani, the Buddhas of the ten directions will immediately come to bear witness, and all sinful hindrances will be completely eliminated. All ten evils and five heinous acts, slandering people and the Dharma, breaking fasts and precepts, destroying stupas and temples, stealing from the monastic community, defiling pure and chaste conduct—all such evil deeds and grave offenses will be utterly extinguished. There is only one exception: for those who harbor doubt towards the mantra, even minor sins and light karmic obstructions will not be eradicated, let alone grave offenses. Although grave offenses may not be immediately eradicated, they can still become a distant cause for enlightenment."

She further addressed the Buddha: "World-Honored One, if any human or heavenly being recites and upholds the Great Compassion Mantra, they will obtain fifteen kinds of auspicious rebirths and will not suffer fifteen kinds of untimely death. The untimely deaths are: first, they will not die from starvation and hardship; second, they will not die from imprisonment, shackles, or beating; third, they will not die at the hands of enemies or adversaries; fourth, they will not die in battle, killed by armies; fifth, they will not die from being mauled by tigers, wolves, or fierce beasts; sixth, they will not die from the venom of poisonous snakes, scorpions, or centipedes; seventh, they will not die from drowning or burning; eighth, they will not die from poison; ninth, they will not die from harmful insects or venom; tenth, they will not die from madness or loss of mindfulness; eleventh, they will not die from falling from mountains, trees, or cliffs; twelfth, they will not die from curses or evil spells cast by wicked people; thirteenth, they will not die from being taken advantage of by evil spirits or ghosts; fourteenth, they will not die from being afflicted by malignant diseases; fifteenth, they will not die from harming themselves without cause. A reciter of the Great Compassion Mantra will not suffer these fifteen kinds of untimely death.

The fifteen kinds of auspicious rebirths are: first, wherever they are reborn, they will always encounter virtuous rulers; second, they will always be reborn in virtuous lands; third, they will always encounter favorable times; fourth, they will always meet good friends; fifth, their physical faculties will always be complete and intact; sixth, their aspiration for the path will be pure and mature; seventh, they will not violate the precepts; eighth, all their family and companions will be harmonious, kind, and agreeable; ninth, their provisions, wealth, and food will always be abundant and sufficient; tenth, they will constantly receive the respect and support of others; eleventh, all their treasures and wealth will not be plundered by others; twelfth, whatever they wish and seek will be fulfilled according to their desires; thirteenth, dragon kings and virtuous deities will constantly guard and protect them; fourteenth, wherever they are reborn, they will see the Buddha and hear the Dharma; fifteenth, the true Dharma they hear will enable them to comprehend its profound meaning. If there is one who recites and upholds the Great Compassion Dharani, they will obtain these fifteen kinds of auspicious rebirths. All heavenly beings and humans should constantly recite and uphold it, without giving rise to laziness."

Having spoken these words, the Bodhisattva Guanyin, before the entire assembly, joined her palms and stood upright. With a mind of great compassion towards all beings, her face opened into a smile, and she then proclaimed this vast, perfect, unobstructed, and wonderfully profound verse of the Great Compassion Dharani Mantra.

The Dharani says:

After Guanyin Bodhisattva spoke this mantra, the great earth shook in six ways, and heavenly jeweled flowers rained down in profusion. The buddhas of the ten directions were all delighted. Demons and heretics were terrified, their hair standing on end. All in the assembly attained the fruit of realization: some attained the fruit of Stream-enterer, some the fruit of Once-returner, some the fruit of Non-returner, and some the fruit of Arhat. Others attained the first, second, third, fourth, or fifth stage, up to the tenth stage. Countless beings gave rise to the mind of enlightenment.

The Great Compassion Mantra Sutra(End)

The "Secret Records of Eight Schools" states: "The Vast, Perfect, Unobstructed Great Compassionate Heart Great Dharani, the Divine and Wondrous Verses, in One Scroll." Although the name may vary in detail, it should refer to this scripture, as it mentions the "vast, perfect, unobstructed great compassionate heart dharani, the divine and wondrous verses." This year, I sought the manuscript of the monk Zheng from Luoyang, Zhiji Cisun, to collate and correct it, adding national annotations and preparing it for printing. At the time, it was the autumn month of July in the year Xinyou, during the reign of Emperor He.
