Sutra on the Merit of Reckoning Prayer Beads in the Mantra Treasury of Manjushri

Translation by the Tang Dynasty Tripiṭaka Master Śramaṇa Yijing

The Buddha said to Manjushri, "Excellent, excellent! Let me hear what you have to say."

Manjushri Bodhisattva said: "As for Bodhi seeds, if someone carries these Bodhi prayer beads on their person but does not formally recite the Buddha's name or mantras according to the proper method—merely keeping them with them while walking, standing, sitting, or lying down, and whatever words they speak, whether good or evil—the merit they gain from simply holding the Bodhi seeds is no different from reciting the names of all Buddhas and chanting mantras. They will obtain boundless blessings. As for the prayer beads themselves, one must use a full set of 108 beads. If that is difficult to obtain, one may use 54, or 27, or even just 14 beads—this represents the difference in merit according to the number of beads. For what reason do I now particularly praise using Bodhi seeds as bringing the greatest benefit?"

Manjushri Bodhisattva said: "In times long past, a Buddha appeared in the world and attained perfect enlightenment under this tree. At that time, a follower of false views, his mind corrupted by wrong beliefs, slandered the Three Jewels. He had a son who was suddenly killed by a non-human being. The non-believer thought, 'I hold these wrong views, but I do not know what divine powers the Buddhas truly possess. Since the Tathagata attained perfect enlightenment under this tree, if he is truly sacred, the tree should respond.' So he laid his dead son beneath the Bodhi tree and said, 'If this Buddha tree is holy, may my son revive.' For seven days he recited the Buddha's name, and indeed his son came back to life.

Overjoyed, the non-believer praised, 'Buddhas have great divine powers—I have never seen such things! The tree where the Buddha attained enlightenment has displayed this rare wonder. It is truly majestic and inconceivable!' When the other followers of wrong views heard this, they abandoned false beliefs and returned to the true path, awakening the Bodhi mind and believing that the Buddha's powers are beyond imagination.

Because of this event, people call this tree 'The Life-Extending Tree.' Thus, the Bodhi tree has two names: the Bodhi Tree and the Life-Extending Tree."

At that time, the great being Manjushri had finished speaking these words. The Buddha said: "Excellent, excellent, Manjushri! Just as you have said."
