> Gold-Adorned Buddha

> Gold represents phenomenal practice; the Buddha represents principle. The Two Vehicles practitioners only cultivate the samādhi of emptiness, the liberation gates of signlessness and wishlessness. They do not behold the Buddhas of other directions, do not cultivate merits such as the physical marks, and do not even have pure Buddha lands—how much less rebirth \[in the Pure Land\]! Therefore, we know that if principle lacks phenomenal practice, it remains undeveloped in expression—just as a Buddha image must be adorned with gold, signifying adornment through practice. The human and heavenly vehicle practitioners, though they cultivate various practices with signs, if they do not direct their vows toward the Pure Land, they will fall into the Three Realms and remain within the Five Paths of rebirth. Therefore, we know that if phenomenal practice lacks principle, it lacks sanctity—just as the gold must be formed into a Buddha image, signifying direction toward principle. Now, those who cultivate the practice of rebirth through pure karma are not like this. Their offering halls are pure and clean, and the Buddha images are dignified and adorned—this is the dual practice of both phenomenal practice and principle. When they attain the fruit of awakening, they will be replete with merit and wisdom, and will ultimately become Buddhas. Hence, the Buddhist disciple, in Sanskrit called Mahakashyapa, meaning "Drinker of Light," in past times merely used a small amount of gold to cast a Buddha image. Consequently, in life after life, golden light radiated from his body, eclipsing even the sun and moon—hence his name. Later, when he encountered the Lotus Sutra's revelation, he suddenly awakened to the Buddha Vehicle, and Shakyamuni predicted that he would become a Buddha in the great adornment kalpa, with a world named Light of Virtue, and the Buddha's title as the Thus Come One of Radiant Light. Therefore, the making of Buddha images and adorning them with gold is a practice of inconceivable merit—this is the reason.
