### 唯心念佛頌并敘

> Mind-Only Buddha Recitation Verses<note>with Preface</note>

> What does it mean to practice Mind-Only Buddha Recitation? It means understanding that all things arise from conditions and have no inherent self-nature. Because they lack self-nature, all phenomena return to their source in the Dharmadhātu, where nothing truly exists. Because they arise from conditions, the mind alone establishes all things, manifesting countless wondrous forms. Thus, we see that conditions and self-nature support and include each other—whether in matters or principles, nothing should be clung to. Only then can one begin cultivation—cultivating without attachment to cultivation, and practicing without the notion of practicing. In this way, one can perfectly accomplish single-minded mindfulness of the Buddha. The Great Treatise says: "Bodhisattvas know that all diligence is illusory, yet they constantly accomplish non-retrogression. This is called true diligence." Therefore, only those who truly understand the mind can steadfastly focus on the Mind-Only Buddha. Only those who truly understand the mind can genuinely aspire to be born in the Mind-Only Pure Land. If even such understanding is needed, then how much more should those who have not yet realized this practice Buddha Recitation? The \*Avataṃsaka Sūtra on the Inconceivable States of the Thus-Come One\* states: "All Buddhas of the three times have no existence apart from the mind; they rely solely on the mind." If Bodhisattvas can realize that all Buddhas and all phenomena are but projections of the mind, they will attain the tolerance of accordance, or enter the first ground. Upon discarding this body, they will quickly be born in the Land of Wonder and Joy, or in the Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. Seeing this, we can understand that Buddha Recitation leading to rebirth is truly the Great Vehicle—this must not be overlooked. Even if one raises the question of ultimate truth or investigates the fundamental source, how could one escape the scope of Amitābha? If one reaches the point of a single thought of Amitābha, there is no need to seek elsewhere for a glimpse of the mountain peak. The \*Awakening of Faith\* says: "For those who first arouse faith in the Great Vehicle, all Buddhas gather them into the Pure Land." Such faith is indeed profound.

> One thought of Amitabha— the very heart of our Buddha school. Recognize this place— ask nothing of other peaks. One thought of Amitabha— what does it mean? Zen is not apart from this; outside this, there is no Zen. One thought of Amitabha— the single word of Yunmen. Zen and Pure Land return to one source; in the end, they are not two. One thought of Amitabha— the wise all hold it dear. Know that sentient beings carry within them the seed of Buddhahood. One thought of Amitabha— a place beyond yin and yang. Nothing in this world or beyond can be compared to it. One thought of Amitabha— no echo in the mountain valley. Sentient and insentient alike are all nurtured by it. One thought of Amitabha— a tree without roots. Growth, abiding, decay, emptiness— all are found here. One thought of Amitabha— shared by all who sit together. To realize its constancy is hard; to part from it is harder still. One thought of Amitabha— forgetting feelings, cutting off thoughts. In that very moment, Amitabha is clearly present. One thought of Amitabha— the moment you grasp it, it changes. When you see seeing itself, what is seen is no longer seeing. One thought of Amitabha— even if insight goes deep, seeing still departs from seeing; seeing cannot reach it. One thought of Amitabha— no past, no present. The treasury of the true Dharma eye, the wondrous mind of nirvana. One thought of Amitabha— the wondrous mind is emptied. Beyond principle and phenomena, outside all words and signs. One thought of Amitabha— the Dharma realm is his body. This field of ground— only those who reach it in person know it's real. One thought of Amitabha— a wooden man sees through. Mountains, rivers, and the great earth— none depart from this. One thought of Amitabha— rice is cooked, the sun is high. Before the offering hall, the golden ox begins to dance. One thought of Amitabha— Weishan's water buffalo. It roams all cloud peaks yet never leaves the gate. One thought of Amitabha— a land with no second lord. If it were otherwise, a tiger would bite a tiger. One thought of Amitabha— always present in time and place. Ten ages, past and present, limitless seas of worlds. One thought of Amitabha— the great stillness of the naga. Speaking of it in the end: realization without anything realized. One thought of Amitabha— the before and after are rolled up. All Buddhas of three times are chosen within this. One thought of Amitabha— it encompasses the Tiantai school. The five periods, eight teachings— a single lifetime includes them all. One thought of Amitabha— unmoving yet following conditions. Inclusive, selective, partial, complete— never called an expedient. One thought of Amitabha— following conditions yet unmoving. Straight to the royal city— no mention of skillful means. One thought of Amitabha— most noble, most honored. Past, future, present— it reaches all three capacities. One thought of Amitabha— empty, conventional, middle, all at once. Embracing dharma, reward, and response— beginning and end, without limit. One thought of Amitabha— principle and phenomena fully interpenetrate. Amitabha and I— not two, yet two. One thought of Amitabha— originally not separate beings. All day long we call ourselves, and ourselves answer back. One thought of Amitabha— intimate, most intimate. Father and son for countless eons— not an outsider at all. One thought of Amitabha— the western land of ultimate bliss. When that Buddha appears, it is my own mind made manifest. One thought of Amitabha— clearly, certainly not wrong. Ultimate bliss is the self-mind; the self-mind is ultimate bliss. One thought of Amitabha— like a mirror reflecting a mirror. The light of boundless life— our original nature from the very start. One thought of Amitabha— selling to oneself, buying from oneself. When the letter to Sukhavati is written, the seal of this Saha world is broken. One thought of Amitabha— the certificate of rebirth. No Buddha comes, yet the Buddha comes; no self goes, yet the self goes. One thought of Amitabha— guide and leader. Ten billion lands to the west— reached in a finger snap. One thought of Amitabha— the road home is long. Yet escaping the three realms is a direct, horizontal leap. One thought of Amitabha— we urge each other onward. With kindness and sternness, each should answer for themselves. One thought of Amitabha— people say it seeks far away. I say it is not so: the perfect radiance pervades all nature. One thought of Amitabha— the mind's mark is Sukhavati. The road home is steady— it cannot be shaken. One thought of Amitabha— it wraps around everything. Only after awakening do you know nothing can defile it. One thought of Amitabha— immediately, clearly seen. Sentient beings, mind, Buddha— all perfected in a single thought. One thought of Amitabha— originally the ultimate principle. If understanding is not genuine, right and wrong arise in dispute. One thought of Amitabha— mistaken for consciousness. Picking pebbles in a spring pool, discarding the family treasure. One thought of Amitabha— the land is inherent in mind. Seeking mind apart from land— such a person has not yet awakened. One thought of Amitabha— both doubt and resolve. Self-nature, mind-only— this vision must be intimate. One thought of Amitabha— consciousness is not it. Amitabha and consciousness dwell in the same instant. One thought of Amitabha— Amitabha is self-nature. Mistaking consciousness for it— a terminal illness indeed. One thought of Amitabha— not a Buddha outside. The Amitabha of ten eons is a treasure within self-nature. One thought of Amitabha— directly pointing to this instant. True mind and deluded mind— similar, yet not the same. One thought of Amitabha— mind-only Pure Land. Clinging to the shadow of conditions— taking a servant for the father. One thought of Amitabha— not located in the chest. The western Pure Land is contained in mind alone. One thought of Amitabha— the wise and foolish differ. The wise seek that land; the foolish cling to the chest. One thought of Amitabha— the sun-faced, moon-faced Buddha. Phenomena have east and west; principle is not divided by a thread. One thought of Amitabha— with vows and without vows. It gathers all three capacities— the most just and public teaching. One thought of Amitabha— the superior root needs no vow. Already atop the tenth ground— this is not a fixed rule. One thought of Amitabha— the middle root without vows, afflictions and karma not yet cleared— that would be a mistaken view. One thought of Amitabha— the inferior root without vows— not knowing the Pure Land— no wonder such views arise. One thought of Amitabha— the mirror of a thousand sages. If you think you've grasped it directly, you are surely deceived. One thought of Amitabha— the wondrous medicine for sickness. How do you know its taste? You must chew it slowly. One thought of Amitabha— the supreme vehicle. Not realizing what is before you— such a one has not yet truly attained. One thought of Amitabha— even the foolish can do it. Believe in the western land— the lotus flower is your pledge. One thought of Amitabha— no separate judgment needed. With faith, vow, and practice complete, you will surely reach the other shore. One thought of Amitabha— faith must be vast. Rebirth in the Pure Land never leaves the mind. One thought of Amitabha— vows must be deep and true. Within it, longing and renouncing— every thought sincere and earnest. One thought of Amitabha— practice must be focused and sustained. Even at the moment of death, never forget, not even briefly. One thought of Amitabha— the samadhi of single practice. Through all twelve hours, hold on without retreat. One thought of Amitabha— the Buddha has his original vow. Even ten recitations bring rebirth— how much more if we never cease. One thought of Amitabha— judging by this, that Buddha has affinities with us. Therefore we strive. One thought of Amitabha— a single strand of white silk. Press forward bravely— no need to turn your face. One thought of Amitabha— the Dharma realm is one mark. Going toward, no one goes— yet we head to Sukhavati. One thought of Amitabha— don't insist on awakening. Believe you can go there— this is the urgent matter. One thought of Amitabha— the direct road to returning home. The nine grades of lotus— for monk and lay alike. One thought of Amitabha— I vow to leave this red dust behind. Seeking rebirth in the west, never to fall back again. One thought of Amitabha— your name inscribed on the lotus calyx. With samadhi complete, you return to your resting place. One thought of Amitabha— a great general against enemies. Of all countless Dharma gates, none surpasses this. One thought of Amitabha— do not procrastinate. Strive to lift it up— cut through a thousand entanglements. One thought of Amitabha— leaps beyond the wheel of suffering. For a hundred thousand eons, you escape bitterness and pain. One thought of Amitabha— fellow practitioners of pure karma. Don't argue right and wrong; yield fame and profit to others. One thought of Amitabha— neither hard nor easy. Just attain single-mindedness, and its splendor is complete. One thought of Amitabha— what does it mean? The more focused, the more unified— ask nothing more. One thought of Amitabha— inconceivable. Utterly sudden, utterly complete, utterly simple, utterly easy. One thought of Amitabha— now is the time. This direct path— doubt it no longer. One thought of Amitabha— for practice in the final age, to escape the realms of suffering, there is only rebirth. One thought of Amitabha— guard it at every moment. If rebirth is not yet won, can you avoid fear and dread? One thought of Amitabha— cherish this one move. At the moment of departure, never draw back. One thought of Amitabha— the key is joyful longing. The splendor of Sukhavati is arranged by your own mind. One thought of Amitabha— the key is deep renunciation. The eight sufferings press upon you; there is no place to escape. One thought of Amitabha— the key is urgent mind. Simply seek liberation, and this Saha world is cut off at once. One thought of Amitabha— the key is urgent recitation. Lift up the sacred name— bite through iron, chew through nails. One thought of Amitabha— the key is focused urgency. Simply resolve to do it— there is no other secret. One thought of Amitabha— the key is piercing urgency. Body crumbling like a mountain, shedding tears of blood in surrender. One thought of Amitabha— the key is urgent faith. Kick over the mass of doubt— shattered into a hundred pieces. One thought of Amitabha— the key is urgent vow. Resolved to be reborn, not turning to anything else. One thought of Amitabha— the key is urgent practice. Even if the fires of eons blaze, the mind never changes course. One thought of Amitabha— response and call, like shadow and form. Originally empty in substance— such is our joy and fortune. One thought of Amitabha— the Buddha is made by mind. The lotus platform hangs in welcome, guiding us to ultimate bliss. One thought of Amitabha— a transformed Buddha atop the crown. Outside the Buddha, no mind; outside the mind, nothing at all. One thought of Amitabha— the vase of jewels on the topknot. Nothing other than this— the innate spirit within. One thought of Amitabha— filling all of space. The great assembly in one gathering— neither different nor the same. One thought of Amitabha— the unmoving place of awakening. Without leaving this very thought, one has already gone west. One thought of Amitabha— the lotus blooms in the jeweled pool. Realizing the patience of non-arising, seeing the Tathagata face to face. One thought of Amitabha— turning self toward others. The ten bodies manifest in full, transforming throughout this Saha world. One thought of Amitabha— the essential work of liberating beings. Self-nature is boundless; all sentient beings are saved. One thought of Amitabha— the bodhi vow is fulfilled. Self-nature is inexhaustible; afflictions are cut off at once. One thought of Amitabha— this is perfect awakening. Self-nature is measureless; all Dharma gates are surpassed. One thought of Amitabha— the everlasting still light. Self-nature is supreme; the Buddha way is fully accomplished. One thought of Amitabha— the unconstructed public matter. Saint or ordinary being— no further proof is needed. One thought of Amitabha— passed down through endless eons. May all who have consciousness ascend together to that land of bliss.
