> Daily Practice Leads to Peace at Death <note>with commentary</note>

> It is known that those who seek rebirth should not be overly hasty in mind. The key is to maintain a balance—neither clinging too tightly nor letting go entirely. Take, for example, Dharma Master Fachan, who spent thirty years devoted to Pure Land practices, or the Vinaya Master Huìhēng, who spent sixty years single-mindedly cultivating the path of Pure Land. Most people today are often short-sighted. They hear about reciting the Buddha's name, but after only half a year or a year, or at most eight to ten years, their pure state of mind has not yet matured. Nor have they carefully studied and savored the Pure Land scriptures, so they fail to grasp their true flavor. Then they speak of changing course or regressing, hoping for accomplishment on the path of spiritual practice—how could such a day ever come? Thus, an ancient Confucian once said: "One should not, because the practice of benevolence is hard to perfect, willingly settle for the achievements of other paths." This is precisely what is being referred to here. Moreover, the essential point of the Pure Land path is that it applies equally to those with sharp faculties and those with dull faculties, to longtime practitioners and beginners alike. Whether one's mind is calm or not is ultimately tested at the moment of death—whether one attains rebirth there is the true measure of success. Everything else, such as seeking sudden enlightenment or developing wisdom, is not of primary importance. Therefore, I say to my fellow students who come after: this extraordinary path, having once entered, hold firm and do not waver.

> In the pursuit of liberation, there is no room for compromise. It all rests on the practitioner's own resolve. Every skill is honed through devoted practice— Do not let the greater purpose be lost to mere expertise.

> In this life, my only hope is to return to the Western Pure Land. With unwavering certainty, my vow will not be broken. In a snap of the fingers, I surpass the fleeting dreams of this world— A hundred thousand times swifter than the speed of flight.

> When the deep meditation is complete, one lets go and returns— At the moment of departure, the Buddha's light naturally surrounds. Fretting over the past and worrying about the future is but futile effort— All we need is to cut off right and wrong.
