The Essential Compendium of Śākyamuni's Teachings was compiled by the eminent monk Daocheng during the Tianxi era of the Northern Song Dynasty. Originating in the Song period, when Buddhism had permeated all levels of Chinese society, this work aimed to provide both monastics and lay practitioners with a practical encyclopedia of Buddhist knowledge. The text is divided into three volumes and twenty-four sections, systematically organizing Buddhist terminology, institutional regulations, ritual practices, cultivation methods, and daily conduct. Concise in content and accessible in language, it is revered as a classic introductory text to Song Dynasty Buddhism. Holding significant historical value for understanding the institutions, culture, and daily life of Chinese Buddhism, it serves as an essential foundational document for the study of Chinese Buddhist history.

According to the Avatamsaka Sutra, a Bodhisattva possesses ten kinds of knowledge: knowledge of all establishments, knowledge of all languages, knowledge of all discourses, knowledge of all rules, knowledge of all titles, knowledge of all decrees, knowledge of provisional names, knowledge of the inexhaustible, knowledge of cessation, and knowledge of all emptiness. Based on these, it is divided into twenty-seven chapters. Thus, the texts and passages of the sutras, vinaya, and shastras of both Hinayana and Mahayana are all included within these ten knowledges.
