### 第二段　住止迦摩羅尸羅寺

> Section Two: Dwelling at the Kamarashila Monastery

> The monastery was called Kamarashila (some translate it as "Precepts-Fragrance Monastery." Some say this was the name of a yaksha, and the monastery was built to suppress him, so it should be called "Yaksha-Suppressing Monastery." Others say "Vikramashila" means "overshadowing" and "shila" means "precepts," so it should be called "Precepts-Overshadowing Monastery," and so on). This monastery was originally built by King Dharmapala (the story of its founding is too lengthy to recount here). It regularly provided for four groups of great masters, twenty-seven in each group, totaling one hundred and eight. There were also twelve guest monk positions, reserved for those traveling to visit the sacred sites. In addition, there were colleges for studying grammar and logic, with about two hundred monks in total, all of them masters of the three baskets and outstanding scholars of the five sciences. Among the most famous of that time, there were fifty-seven, and the one whom they all reverently honored was Master Atisha.

> The Elder resided at Vajra Seat Monastery, and his great renown spread throughout all Five Regions of India. At that time, the protector king of Vikramashila—the one previously referred to as "Stop-Kamala-Shila," with the "ra" syllable omitted, also known as Vikramashila—later known as the Great Protector King, earnestly and sincerely invited him to be an object of offerings. At that time, in the Vikramashila temple, on the front wall of the main hall, Nagarjuna Bodhisattva was painted on the right and the Elder on the left, meaning that his virtues equaled Nagarjuna's. On the two side walls of the hall were painted, respectively, those skilled in the five sciences and those who had attained spiritual accomplishments. The Elder was painted on both walls, indicating that he possessed both qualities. At that time, according to Indian monastic custom, those of great skill and wisdom held the keys to the monastery; the Elder held eighteen keys, and his propagation of the Dharma and benefit of beings needs no mention. (The expulsion of the teaching-master Maitreya happened at this time; later, when he was about to depart for Tibet, he had one hundred and eight keys.)
