3. Mind and Land as One
It is said:
The Amitabha Sutra says: "West from here, passing through ten trillion Buddha-lands, there is a world called Ultimate Bliss." One hundred billion suns and moons, one hundred billion Mount Sumerus, one hundred billion great oceans, and one hundred billion iron-ring mountains make up one Buddha-land. Ten thousand make a myriad, one hundred thousand make a million, and ten million make a billion. Even a single Buddha-land is vast beyond measure—how much vaster are billions of Buddha-lands? And how much vaster are ten trillion? Thus, Ultimate Bliss is extremely far from here. Yet if ordinary beings sincerely recite the Buddha’s name and seek rebirth, they arrive in an instant. Why? Precisely because they are being reborn in the Pure Land that exists inherently within their own minds. The phrase "a mere thought" refers to the very thought of an ordinary person reciting the Buddha’s name. This momentary thought is extremely small and faint—hence the word "mere." The Pure Land, though ten trillion lands away, dwells within this mere thought of an ordinary being. The mind itself is the land, and the land itself is the mind. Therefore, it is said: "From the very beginning, there is no distinction here or there between them."
