Once, the Buddha, the World-Honored One, was staying in the Jeta Grove, in the garden of Anathapindika, near the city of Shravasti, together with a community of monks.
The Buddha addressed the monks, saying: "I will now teach you about five kinds of great giving. What are these five? They are: first, refraining from taking life—this is a great giving; second, refraining from stealing; third, refraining from sexual misconduct; fourth, refraining from false speech; fifth, refraining from intoxicating drinks. These are the five kinds of great giving."
"Then why is the practice of refraining from killing called a Great Gift? Because through non-killing, one is able to give fearlessness to countless beings. Through this fearlessness, they are free from hostility, hatred, and harm. Since countless beings have received this fearlessness and are free from hostility, hatred, and harm, they experience peace and happiness both in heaven and among humans. Therefore, non-killing is called a Great Gift. The same holds true for refraining from stealing, sexual misconduct, false speech, and intoxicating drinks."
