The *Genealogy of the Śākya Clan* compiled by the eminent Tang dynasty Vinaya master Daoxuan is a crucial text for the study of the Buddha's life. Composed during the flourishing period of early Tang Buddhism, it aims to systematically trace the lineage origins and biographical events of Śākyamuni. Its contents encompass the complete genealogy of the Buddha, from his clan and family heritage, birth, spiritual cultivation, attainment of enlightenment, propagation of the Dharma, up to his parinirvāṇa, and also include chronological investigations and the transmission of the teachings. As an early biography of the Buddha authored by a patriarch of Chinese Buddhism, this work employs a rigorous historical and biographical style to establish an authoritative framework for the Buddha's lineage. It provides a classical model for later studies of the Buddha's life and holds a pioneering position in the fields of Buddhist historiography and biographical literature.
