### 年譜

> Chronology

乙未。師於是年。十一月。二十七日。辰時生。

> Here is the translation: \*\*Yiwu year. The Master was born in the early morning hour (辰時, 7–9 AM) on the 27th day of the 11th month of that year.\*\*

庚子。師至是甫六歲。夢一僧。點其心曰。汝佗日當自省。既覺以意白母黃氏。視之。當心一點紅瑩。大似世之櫻珠。

> In the year Gengzi, when the master was only six years old, he dreamed of a monk who pointed to his heart and said, "In the future, you will come to realize this on your own." Upon waking, he told his mother, Lady Huang, about the dream. When she looked, there was a bright red mark on his chest, much like a cherry in the world.

甲寅。是年八月。師依壽隆賢和尚出家。而和光應世生。

> In the year Jiayin, in the eighth month, the Master took refuge and became a monk under the Venerable Shoulongxian. And thus, he came into the world, shining his light harmoniously with the times.

辛酉。是年四月八日。填祠牒為僧。禮壽隆賢和尚。為師。

> On the Xin You year, on the eighth day of the fourth month, he filled out the monastic registration form and became a monk. He paid respects to the Venerable Xian of Shoulong Temple as his teacher.

壬戌。是年五月。師受甘露大戒。於袁州之開元寺。

> In the year of Renxu, during the fifth month, the Master received the Great Precepts of Sweet Dew at Kaiyuan Temple in Yuanzhou.

癸亥。師是年入湘。訪溈山牧菴忠禪師。師問。萬法歸一。一歸何處。忠公竪拂示師。師有省。即回受業。是歲圓通生。

> In the year of Guihai, the Master entered Hunan and visited Chan Master Mu'an Zhong of Weishan. The Master asked, "All dharmas return to the One—where does the One return to?" Master Zhong raised his whisk as an answer, and the Master had an insight. He immediately returned to his home temple. That year, Yuantong was born.

甲子。圓成生。

> In the year of Jiazi, Yuancheng was born.

丁卯。圓泟生。

> At dawn. Yuan Hong was born.

戊辰。圓信生。

> In the year of Wuchen, Yuanxin was born.

己巳。十一月望日。牧菴示寂于黃龍。

> On the day of Jisi, the fifteenth day of the eleventh month, Master Mu'an passed away at Huanglong.

癸酉。師三十有九。領使帖住慈化。因閱華嚴合論。至達本情忘。知心體合處。豁然大悟。徧體汗流。喜曰。我今親契華嚴法界矣。自此弘誓。開化人天。

> In the year of Guiyou, when the master was thirty-nine, he received an official notice and took residence at Cihua Temple. While reading the \*Huayan He Lun\* (Commentary on the Avatamsaka Sutra), he came to the passage about "reaching the origin and forgetting emotions, knowing the mind's essence merges with reality." In that moment, he suddenly experienced a great awakening. Sweat poured from his entire body. Overjoyed, he said, "Now I have personally realized the Dharma Realm of the Avatamsaka Sutra!" From that point on, he made a great vow to teach and enlighten both humans and celestial beings.

丙子。師四十有二。於五月。賢和尚示寂。七月師奉檄。兼管壽隆。

> In the year of Bingzi, the Master was forty-two years old. In the fifth month, the Venerable Xian passed away. In the seventh month, the Master, upon receiving orders, also took charge of Shoulong Temple.

甲申。是秋圓通祝髮於慈化。

> In the year of Jiashen, that autumn, Yuantong shaved his head and became a monk at Cihua Temple.

己丑。師壽五十五矣。而弟子圓通。於三月三日示寂。七月二十一日。師索筆。書偈于方丈西壁。跏趺而逝。

> In the year of Jichou, the Master reached the age of fifty-five. His disciple Yuantong passed away on the third day of the third month. On the twenty-first day of the seventh month, the Master asked for a brush and wrote a verse on the western wall of the abbot's quarters. Then, seated in the full lotus position, he passed away.
