### No. 1194-B自序

> Preface to No. 1194-B

> The Buddha said: Human life is impermanent and fleeting, shorter than a single breath. This two-line warning should truly awaken us with urgency. Yet the body arises from karmic consciousness, and the mind follows wandering thoughts. If one does not single-mindedly chant the Buddha's name and maintain clear awareness, then at the moment of death, even ten mindfulness attempts will bring ten different confusions. Like dust blown wildly by the wind, we will not know where we drift to. Those endowed with Buddha-nature — how could they not be afraid?

> But the Dharma is as vast as the ocean—only faith allows one to enter. Among all the methods, the Pure Land path places the greatest emphasis on faith. Before faith, there is no other good practice. Once faith is established, never doubt again. This is true faith in Pure Land, true mindfulness of the Buddha, and it will certainly lead to rebirth in the Pure Land. I am burdened with heavy ignorance and deep karmic obstructions; ashamed that I have accomplished nothing and know next to nothing. Fortunately, I have had the chance to visit the four sacred mountains, listen to teachings, and receive guidance. Each time, the matter of life and death was pointed out, and the most direct path was said to be none other than the practice of mindfulness of the Buddha. It is described as the safest, most reliable method—guaranteed to reach the goal. Aside from this path, there is no other way. This is the truth.

> Because I was a beginner, I gladly took refuge. Right before the statue of Amitabha Buddha, I burned my finger and made a vow: "From this moment on, for the rest of my life and all future lives, if my tongue does not rot, I will never stop reciting the Buddha's name. If my body does not die, I will never cease my practice of mindfulness of the Buddha." Since that vow was made, even if I were reborn as an animal or another lowly being, I would still have a body and a tongue. With a body and a tongue, I would continue reciting without stopping. And if I never stop reciting, even falling into lower realms would not be suffering. Why? Because relying on the Buddha's power is like a prisoner being brought close to the king—what suffering could there be? Thus, even with such heavy obstacles and dull faculties, I could only make such a vow. Now I simply rely on ultimate faith, deep resolve, and steadfast practice.

> I humbly take the words of the Amitabha Sutra, along with the teachings of the Buddha and the patriarchs, and respectfully compose thirty-two verses. These are formed according to the sutra; I dare not add my own conjectures. Following these, forty-eight hymns and others are compiled into one volume, titled \*The Ultimate Faith Record of the Pure Land\*. Though expressed in common language and simple terms, it never strays from the essential truth of the Pure Land—just as all rivers flow into the sea, blending into one salty taste, and the sea accepts all rivers without discrimination. Therefore, though the writing is rough and unrefined, the words may still find their mark. When wise readers peruse this, may they have compassion on my plainness and know my sincere intention. I pray you calmly ponder its meaning, so that together we may believe in this path and ascend together to the Land of Bliss. Do not reject the words because of the person, betraying your own Buddha-nature. This record is specifically written for my own self-encouragement and sincere practice. How would I dare present it for others' eyes?! I am deeply humbled and ashamed.

> On the eve of Lunar New Year's Eve, in the winter of the Xinwei year of the Tongzhi reign (1871), I, Lian Gen Jie Xiang, a student of the Pure Land seeking rebirth in the West, bow my head and inscribe this at Yi Fo Ju in Eastern Yue.
