The Sutra Spoken by the Buddha on the Mantra to Dispel Epidemic Spirits is a Chinese Buddhist scripture, traditionally translated by the Central Asian monk Zhu Tanwulan during the Eastern Jin Dynasty. Emerging in the medieval period against a backdrop of frequent epidemics, this sutra primarily expounds dhāraṇī mantras and related practices for preventing and curing plague, reflecting Buddhism's concern for worldly suffering and its remedies. It emphasizes that reciting these sacred mantras can ward off epidemic pathogens and calm the body and mind, bearing distinct characteristics of folk belief and healing practices. Although not a core doctrinal text, this sutra illustrates the integration of Buddhism with Chinese social culture and serves as an important document for the study of Buddhist medicine, mantra beliefs, and ancient social life, holding a unique place within the practical system of Chinese Buddhism.
