> Setting Fire

> All things have their attachments. For example, a snake loves its den. The Bodhisattva uses a great fire to burn it away, making the bare ground of reality suddenly appear. This is the skillful means of liberation. If one is attached to activity, they love meditating in mountains and wilderness. Wait until they enter that state, then burn it away. If one is attached to stillness, they love meditating in homes and monasteries. Wait until they emerge from that state, then burn it away. Emerging and then re-entering, without abiding anywhere; re-entering and then emerging, without attachment to any object—then skillful means is perfected. A skilled physician uses medicine to remove a film from the eye, without harming the eye itself. An unskilled one loses both the film and the eye. This is like burning the emergence when one emerges, and burning the entry when one enters. Sometimes the Bodhisattva destroys worlds, sometimes he creates worlds. Sometimes he gives everything, sometimes he takes everything. Taking is giving, and giving is giving. Destruction is creation, and creation is creation.
