> Examining the Three Jewels—Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha—the reverence for Buddha and Dharma goes without saying. Yet the Sangha stands as the third pillar, its importance equally evident. The Sangha bears the sole responsibility of spreading the Dharma and comprises those who will personally realize Buddhahood in the future. They expand the vow of great compassion and dedicate themselves to universal liberation, serving as guides for humanity and companions on the path. They perpetuate the tradition and set an example for generations to come. Reflecting on this, one cannot help but bow in reverence. Thus, gathering and promoting the Sangha is not a private glory of ancient sages but a universal principle of truth. In the Liang Dynasty, Huijiao initiated this effort, followed by Daoxuan, Zanning, Ruxing, and other venerable masters. Through their work, the profound practices of ascetics in remote mountains, the deep meditation of wall-gazing masters, their unimpeded eloquence, and their vast vows were all recorded, shining like the sun and stars through the ages. Just as rare treasures inevitably emit light, drawing from the ancient well requires a sturdy rope. As the saying goes, "Each enhances the other"—how true this is! Today, Venerable Daojie of Fayuan Temple in Yanjing, together with elders from various mountains, shares this noble aspiration to continue the legacy. They entrusted the compilation to our society's friend, Mr. Yu Meian. Though initially hesitant and modest, he ultimately could not refuse their earnest request. For five years, he diligently collected materials, sifting through past and present, categorizing by school and lineage. Noting that Ruxing’s collection was incomplete in its principles, he revised it based on Master Renshan’s discussions, incorporating additional content. From the Song Dynasty’s Duan Gong era to the late Qing’s Xuantong period, spanning over a thousand years, all eminent virtuous elders have been included. Truly, this compilation is a grand panorama of the monastic community and a reliable history of the Chan forests. In the early autumn of the Guihai year, the editing was completed. It illuminates the hidden virtues of the past, provides a model for future practitioners, fulfills Renshan’s unfinished aspirations, and expresses the profound intentions of the venerable masters. This single endeavor accomplishes fourfold goodness. As for myself, though I aspire to the profound depths of Buddhist studies but have yet to attain them, I rejoice in the completion of this work. Honoring Mr. Meian’s repeated request, I humbly contribute these words to detail its origins. This is not the insight of an expert but merely a fool’s humble offering.
