Refutation of False Views (破邪論)

The Treatise on Refuting Falsehoods was composed by the Tang dynasty monk Falin in response to the memorial submitted by the Grand Astrologer Fu Yi in the early Tang period, which petitioned for the abolition of Buddhism. This work draws upon Confucian, Daoist, and historical classics to systematically refute Fu Yi’s accusations against Buddhism, demonstrating that Buddhism does not hinder imperial authority and instead contributes to moral cultivation. With its clear apologetic stance and rigorous logic, the text stands as an important representative work of Buddhist apologetic literature from the Tang dynasty. It not only effectively safeguarded the status of Buddhism in its time but also provides crucial historical material for later studies on the relationship among Confucianism, Buddhism, and Daoism, as well as on Tang dynasty religious policies.
