The Sutra on the Pure, Adorned, Reverent, and Auspicious Entrustment in the Golden Coffin is a Buddhist scripture suspected to have been composed in China, with an unknown author. It is traditionally believed to have originated from the Sui or Tang dynasty, though the original text has been lost. The content records Śākyamuni Buddha’s final instructions to his disciples before entering nirvana, delivered from within a golden coffin. He urged them to emphasize pure practice, dignified reverence, and the accumulation of merit, highlighting the importance of precepts and the cultivation of blessings. This scripture reflects the emphasis on ritual and practice in Chinese Buddhism. Although not an Indian original, it holds influence within East Asian Buddhism, particularly embodying the Mahāyāna integration of worldly reverence and merit with transcendent purity.
