Great Victory Vajra Buddha Crown Recitation Ritual
南天竺三藏金剛智奉 詔譯
Translated by Vajrabodhi of Southern India by Imperial Decree
爾時世尊為末世一切眾生故現五種光明，從頂上放火光照三界，所有惡魔鬼神等不信佛教者同時悉焚燒。金剛手菩薩見是相已，白世尊言：「如來智火被燒所有天魔鬼神於眾生生害者，悉恐怖不得安樂。欲說何法？唯願如來演說。」爾時大毘盧遮那佛告金剛手菩薩言：「有明王名大勝佛頂心呪，誦一遍所求滿足，十方諸佛中最勝明王。若有金剛子誦滿五萬遍，一切諸佛、大菩薩、天龍天女眾晝夜共守護，令成所願。」爾時如來說明曰：
At that time, the World-Honored One, for the sake of all beings in the Dharma-ending age, manifested five kinds of radiant light. From the crown of his head, he emitted a blazing light that illuminated the three realms. All evil spirits, demons, and deities who did not believe in the Buddha’s teachings were simultaneously consumed by the flames. Seeing this sign, the Bodhisattva Vajrapāṇi addressed the World-Honored One, saying:
"The wisdom-fire of the Tathāgata has burned all celestial demons, evil spirits, and deities who bring harm to sentient beings, causing them to be terrified and unable to find peace. What Dharma will you now expound? I beseech the Tathāgata to proclaim it."
Then, the Great Vairocana Buddha said to the Bodhisattva Vajrapāṇi:
"There is a vidyārāja named the Great Victorious Buddha-Crown Heart Mantra. Reciting it once fulfills all wishes. Among all the Buddhas of the ten directions, this is the most supreme vidyārāja. If a vajra disciple recites it fifty thousand times, all Buddhas, great bodhisattvas, celestial dragons, and heavenly maidens will protect them day and night, enabling them to accomplish their aspirations."
Then the Tathāgata proclaimed the mantra:
「唵麼賀縛日羅(二合)瑟抳(二合)灑吽(引)怛路(二合)瀨利(二合)惡(入)吽(引)」
Om, great Vajra, sprinkle it, hum, Tara, ah, hum.
「二手內縛忍願屈如頂，是名根本大印。若有末法轉時，有諸眾生常結此印持念真言者，一切兵力不能相害、水火不焚漂、不便一切惡魔惡鬼，金剛胎藏聖眾坐臥咸來增擁護。
When the two hands are bound inward, with the index fingers bent like a peak, this is called the fundamental great seal. If, during the time of the Dharma's decline, there are sentient beings who constantly form this seal and recite the true words, all military forces will be unable to harm them, fire and water will not burn or drown them, and all evil demons and malevolent spirits will not disturb them. The sacred assembly of the Vajra and Womb realms will always come to sit or lie nearby, increasing their protection.
「復次說畫像法。於黑月房宿取清淨絹素，畫大勝明王，戴五佛冠，出現十二臂，住智拳印，執五𦙶、青蓮花、寶珠、羯磨、鉤、索、鎖、鈴、利劍、輪等印，安住千葉白蓮華，身色如白光，遍身成火光。四角畫四明王，東南角畫不動金剛，西南角馬頭金剛，西北角六足金剛，東北角藥叉金剛。畫此四忿怒王，各執器杖，現極猛利勢。次畫八方天王，各卛眷屬恭敬圍繞。若有真言行者欲供養者，於淨室及山林靜靜處，燒香散時花，念誦真言五十萬遍，我及八佛頂無量天菩薩、金剛天等，現身常隨意奉仕。若有眾生每日誦持此真言，於現在生之中勝一切天人，當未世中身如遍照尊。持此印真言者，能成就十億種所願。復若有行者作種種降魔及一切阿尾捨法者，我作十千金剛童子，則隨意持誦者常住。若悲心莫他相憎，觀吽字心上行住坐臥住本尊三摩地，成就一切願，有情見者悉歡喜愛念。此人如遍照尊，無量諸佛常來覆護不捨。真言行者不起貪瞋癡等煩惱，深歸命三寶，以善根迴向六道者，必速證無上菩提。行者諸穢處，用烏瑟摳摩金剛呪印加持五處，以右手四指作拳，直竪彈指。密言曰：
Furthermore, the method of creating the image is explained. During the dark moon phase in the lunar mansion of Fang, take pure white silk and paint the Great Victorious Bright King. He wears a five-Buddha crown, manifests with twelve arms, and abides in the Wisdom Fist Mudra. He holds the five skulls, a blue lotus, a precious pearl, a karma implement, a hook, a lasso, a lock, a bell, a sharp sword, a wheel, and other mudras. He rests peacefully on a thousand-petaled white lotus. His body color is like white light, and his entire form radiates fiery brilliance.
At the four corners, paint the four Bright Kings: in the southeast corner, paint Immovable Vajra; in the southwest corner, Horse-Headed Vajra; in the northwest corner, Six-Footed Vajra; in the northeast corner, Yaksha Vajra. Paint these four wrathful kings, each holding their respective implements and displaying an extremely fierce and powerful demeanor.
Next, paint the eight directional heavenly kings, each leading their retinues in respectful attendance.
If a practitioner of true words wishes to make offerings, they should do so in a pure room or in a quiet place in the mountains or forests. Burn incense and scatter seasonal flowers, and recite the true words five hundred thousand times. I, along with the eight Buddha Crowns, countless heavenly bodhisattvas, and vajra deities, will manifest and constantly serve according to their wishes.
If any being recites and upholds this true word daily, in this present life they will surpass all heavenly beings and humans, and in the future, their body will become like that of the Universal Illumination Lord. Those who hold this mudra and true word can accomplish ten billion kinds of wishes.
Furthermore, if a practitioner performs various methods to subdue demons and all Avisha practices, I will manifest as ten thousand vajra youths and constantly abide with the reciter according to their will. If one cultivates compassion and harbors no hatred toward others, contemplating the syllable "Hūṃ" in the heart during walking, standing, sitting, and lying down, abiding in the samadhi of the principal deity, they will accomplish all wishes, and all sentient beings who see them will feel joy, affection, and delight. Such a person is like the Universal Illumination Lord, and countless buddhas will constantly come to protect and never abandon them.
A practitioner of true words should not give rise to afflictions such as greed, anger, or ignorance, but deeply take refuge in the Three Jewels and dedicate their virtuous roots to the six realms of existence. They will certainly swiftly realize unsurpassed enlightenment. When a practitioner is in impure places, they should use the Uṣṇīṣa Vajra mantra and mudra to bless the five places. With the right hand, make a fist with the four fingers and snap the fingers straight upward. The secret words are:
「唵俱路(二合)馱曩吽弱」
Om, the family of the vajra, hūṃ jaḥ.
