The Peacock King Dhāraṇī Sutra was translated and introduced to China by the Later Qin dynasty eminent monk Kumārajīva between the late 4th and early 5th centuries CE. This sutra belongs to the early esoteric Buddhist canon, taking Mahāmāyūrī Vidyārājñī as its principal deity, and focuses on expounding her sacred dhāraṇī and the merits of recitation, aiming to dispel calamities, eliminate difficulties, cure illnesses, and prolong life. The sutra records in detail the practice rituals and application of mantras within the Mahāmāyūrī Vidyārājñī method, reflecting the embryonic form of mantra esotericism within Mahāyāna Buddhism. This scripture not only profoundly influenced the development of Chinese esoteric Buddhism but also laid an important foundation for the formation of Tang dynasty esotericism, serving as a key text for studying the history of Chinese esoteric Buddhism and dhāraṇī literature.

The Buddha Speaks the Dharani Sutra of the Ghost King Atavaka of the Wilderness, Which Removes All Suffering and Illness of Sentient Beings. At that time, the ghost king spoke the dharani:

「世尊!此陀羅尼句,為四部眾令得安隱、離諸惱患,眾魔惡鬼、盜賊水火、旋嵐惡風、羅剎惡鬼、熱病冷病風病等分諸病、家業衰耗所向不利、惡獸卒暴,急誦此呪,一切解脫。今當重說陀羅尼呪:

World-Honored One! This dharani verse brings peace and safety to the fourfold assembly, freeing them from all troubles and afflictions—evil spirits, malevolent ghosts, thieves, floods and fires, violent storms, rakshasa demons, fevers, chills, wind ailments, and all other illnesses; it dispels household decline, unfavorable circumstances, sudden attacks by vicious beasts. When these dangers arise, recite this mantra swiftly, and all will be liberated. Now I shall restate the dharani mantra:

「娑離沙離毘林婆沙呵 速去速去速還汝本來處」

Salisalipilimbasaha, depart quickly, depart quickly, swiftly return to your original place.
