### 鄭十三娘者

> Zheng the Thirteenth Lady

不詳其里居。年十二。隨一師姑。參大溈禪師。師問這師姑甚麼住處。姑云。南臺江邊住。師喝出。又問鄭在甚處住。鄭近前叉手而立。師再問。鄭云。已呈似和尚了也。師云。去。鄭到法堂。師姑云。十三娘尋常道會禪。今日被大師問著。却總無語。鄭曰。苦哉苦哉。作這箇眼目。也道我行脚。脫取衲衣來。與十三娘著。鄭後舉似羅山。云。某甲恁麼祗對。還得平穩也無。羅山云。不得無過。鄭云。過在甚處。羅山叱之。鄭云。錦上添花。保福與甘長老訪鄭。坐定。即問承聞十三娘參溈山是否。曰是。保福云。溈山遷化。向甚處去。鄭起身近牀而立。甘曰。閒時說禪。口似懸河。何不道取。鄭曰。鼓這兩片皮。堪作甚麼。甘曰。不鼓這兩片皮。又堪作甚麼。鄭曰。合取狗口傳燈錄。

> Her origins are unknown. At the age of twelve, she followed a senior nun to visit Master Dawei. The master asked the nun, "Where do you reside?" The nun replied, "I live by the river at Nantai." The master shouted and dismissed her. He then asked Zheng, "Where do you live?" Zheng stepped forward, placed her palms together, and stood silently. The master asked again. Zheng said, "I have already shown it to you, venerable master." The master said, "Go." Zheng went to the Dharma hall. The nun said, "Thirteenth Lady, you always claim to understand Chan. Today, when the great master questioned you, you were completely speechless." Zheng said, "How pitiful! With eyes like these, you still say you travel to study the Way. Take off your robe and give it to Thirteenth Lady to wear." Later, Zheng recounted this to Luoshan, saying, "Was my response appropriate and steady?" Luoshan said, "It was not without fault." Zheng asked, "Where was the fault?" Luoshan rebuked her. Zheng said, "Adding flowers to brocade." Baofu and Elder Gan visited Zheng. Once seated, Baofu asked, "I heard that Thirteenth Lady studied under Weishan. Is that true?" She said, "Yes." Baofu said, "Weishan has passed away. Where did he go?" Zheng rose, approached the bed, and stood there. Gan said, "In idle moments, you speak of Chan like a rushing river. Why not answer now?" Zheng said, "What use is flapping these two lips?" Gan said, "If you don't flap these two lips, what are they good for?" Zheng said, "Better to keep a dog's mouth shut."<note>Transmission of the Lamp</note>
