Buddha's Discourse on Establishing the World Abhidharma Treatise

Chapter 2: Southern Jambudvīpa

The Buddha said, "Monks, there is a tree called the Jambu tree. The land is named after it: Jambudvīpa. This tree grows on the north side of Jambudvīpa, on the south bank of the Nemiñjara River. Its trunk is right at the center of the continent. From the center of the trunk to the eastern and western edges, it measures one thousand yojanas. The tree grows fully, with a lovely appearance: its branches and leaves interweave to form a dense, thick canopy. It never withers, and no wind or rain can penetrate it.

"Monks, imagine a garland-maker weaving a garland or ear ornament—the tree is just as lovely. It spreads out at the top like a canopy, layer upon layer, a hundred yojanas high. Below, the trunk is straight and grand, without any knots or branches for fifty yojanas; only then do branches appear. The trunk itself is five yojanas wide and fifteen yojanas around. Each branch extends horizontally fifty yojanas; the span between opposite branches is one hundred yojanas, and the full circumference is three hundred yojanas.

"When the fruit ripens, its taste is incomparably sweet, like fine honey—so delicious it never grows tiresome. Each fruit is as large as a jar, and its pit is just like the pit of a Jambu fruit in this world. On the tree lives a bird the size of a large monkey, and also a creature like a sixty-year-old elephant; these two beings always eat the fruit.

"The fruit on the eastern branch: most falls onto the land of Jambudvīpa, only a little into the water. The western branch: again, most falls onto land, a little into water. The southern branch: all its fruit falls onto the land of Jambudvīpa. The northern branch: all its fruit falls into the river, where it is eaten by fish. The tree’s roots are entirely covered with golden sand. During the spring rains, it does not become damp; in summer it is not hot; in winter it is not cold. A gandharva and a yakṣa dwell beneath this tree."

At that time, there was a man named Long Legs. He was born into a royal family, of the Koliya clan, and due to his past karma had attained supernatural powers. Such was his awesome ability that when he walked on water, his front foot would not yet have sunk before his back foot had already moved. When he walked on grass, the grass would not yet have bent before he had already taken his next step. When he walked on tree leaves, the leaves would not yet have drooped before his back foot had already passed. Wherever his shoes stepped, there was no difficulty.

Having heard from the Buddha about the great Jambu tree in such detail, Long Legs asked the Buddha, "World-Honored One, if I set out now, can I reach the Jambu tree?" The Buddha replied, "You can reach it." The man then prostrated himself at the Buddha's feet, circumambulated him three times to the right, faced north, and departed.

He crossed several mountains: first, Little Black Mountain; second, Great Black Mountain; third, Many-Yak Mountain; fourth, Sunlight Mountain; fifth, Silver Mountain; sixth, Fragrant-Water Mountain; seventh, Golden-Rim Mountain. Climbing to the top of Golden-Rim Mountain, he turned north and strained his eyes to peer into the distance. He saw nothing but darkness, and frightened, he turned back.

The Buddha asked him, "Did you reach the Jambu tree?" He replied, "No." The Buddha asked, "What did you see?" The man answered, "I only saw darkness." The Buddha said, "That darkness is the Jambu tree."

Again the man prostrated himself, circumambulated three times to the right, and set out once more to the north. He again crossed seven mountains: first, Round-Cakra; second, Great-Cakra; third, Gūḍha Mountain; fourth, Śūra Mountain; fifth, Kīra Mountain; sixth, Gandha Mountain; seventh, Śubhānjī Mountain. Then he crossed six great countries: first, Kuru; second, Golaḍḍhī; third, Videha; fourth, Mahāvideha; fifth, Uttaramandra; sixth, Śaśimālaya. These are the six great countries. Then he crossed seven great forests, with rivers flowing between them, and crossed those seven rivers. Then he crossed the Āmra forest and the Harītakī forest, until he reached the southern branch of the Jambu tree.

Walking along the southern branch, he came to the tree's northern branch. Peering down, he saw that the water below was different from ordinary water—it was extremely clear and pure, so transparent that he could see all the way to the bottom without any obstruction. Seeing this, he thought, "Will my supernatural power still work here?" So he stepped onto the water while holding onto a tree branch. But when his foot touched the water, he sank as if he had stepped on a stone—his supernatural power did not function there.

Why was this? Because that water was extremely light and delicate. If water from that place were poured into an ordinary stream, it would float on the surface like butter or oil. But if ordinary water were poured into that water, it would sink like a stone.

Long Legs took a fruit from the Jambu tree and returned to Rajagriha, where he offered it to the World-Honored One. The Buddha accepted the fruit, broke it into many pieces, and distributed them to the assembly. The fruit's juice stained the Buddha's hand. At that time, the Buddha struck a mountain rock with that hand, and even to this day the rock remains reddish, neither drying out nor fading, with the print of His palm clearly visible. Because the fruit was broken into pieces, this rock was named the "Piece-by-Piece Rock."
