The Daily Guide for Monastics, compiled by the eminent monk Hongzan Vinaya Master in the Qing Dynasty, is a work of monastic regulations that guides the daily practice and life of monastics. This book emerged against the backdrop of the reorganization of Buddhist precepts during the late Ming and early Qing dynasties. It meticulously standardizes all aspects of conduct for monastics from morning awakening to evening rest, including details such as paying homage to the Buddha, reciting sutras, eating, wearing robes, and bedding. Its purpose is to cultivate the precepts, meditation, and wisdom of monastics through rigorous dignified conduct. As an essential practical guide for Vinaya studies in Chinese Buddhism, it reflects the patriarchs' emphasis on precepts and their spirit of practice. It has had a profound influence on the establishment of regulations for later monastic communities and on individual practice, making it one of the core texts for studying the development of Buddhist Vinaya rituals in the Qing Dynasty.
