Chapter 8: Supernatural Powers

Thus it is explained: Having declared the true meaning, the characteristics of the Bodhisattva's miraculous powers are now revealed. The verse says:

Arising and ceasing, sounds and words, The mind's activity, and dwelling first— Toward these one turns to seek release; Six wisdoms arise, mastery and freedom's reach.

When arising and ceasing occurs, it refers to the sphere of wisdom regarding birth and death—understanding the cycle of beings' lives and deaths. When sounds and voices are heard, it refers to the sphere of wisdom from the divine ear—perceiving all words and languages beings produce. When thoughts and intentions move, it refers to the sphere of wisdom from knowing others' minds—understanding the distinctions in the mental activity of others. When past dwelling is concerned, it refers to the sphere of wisdom regarding past lives—knowing the good and evil that beings previously accumulated. When moving toward others, it refers to the sphere of wisdom regarding miraculous powers—traveling everywhere to teach and transform beings wherever they are. When liberation takes place, it refers to the sphere of wisdom regarding the ending of defilements—knowing whether beings should or should not attain liberation from their afflictions. These six kinds of wisdom, with their six different aspects across all worlds, enable a bodhisattva to know everything without hindrance, act with fearless freedom, and this is called the nature of spiritual powers.

Thus the nature has been explained. Next, the practice is described. The verse says:

Within the highest level of pure meditation, Discernment beyond distinctions holds all. Following the skillful means thus established, One purifies all avenues of understanding.

Dwelling in that matchless state, Honored by all with offerings pure, One attains the purest clarity— This is the fruit of transcendent power.

The arising and ceasing of worldly things— See them as an illusion.

All kinds of things others desire— Freely and effortlessly manifest.

**Explanation:** This verse's first half reveals the self's function: it sees all worlds and beings as appearing and disappearing like an illusion. The second half reveals the function of others: actions like making the earth tremble or emitting light manifest freely according to beings' wishes. The ten kinds of mastery are explained in the *Ten Grounds Sutra*.
